H. Srinsted a resident of this city who Is on a tour in the southern part of Cali fornia. Mr. Grinsted gives a very Interesting account of what this dis ease Is doing la California," parti ularly from the standpoint of the tourist. The letter frome the Rose burg man to the News-Review is as follows: News Review, Roseburg, Oregon. Gentlemen: The writer has lust completed a trlD bv auto as far south as Lone X Beach and fortunately we kept ov- in; or we wouiu ue uung up. At one point we traveled this morning 1600 tourist parties are held up and ' In quarantine. They will neither let them proceed nor return. In one days travel we were held up eight times, and compelled to go through a pond of sheep dip and drive our car through a pond of the same material and to open up our baggage and have It turn lgated, as well as ourselves. While passing through the Tejon Pass we were again held up. The wind was blowing, I should judge about eighty miles an hour, we could scarcely keep our feet, and it was bitter cold, the wind coming down from the snow clad mountains. was In company, of Mr. and Mrs. ! Ray Myer of Okanogan. Wash., a ; brother a Mr. Irvin Meyer. We had i in the party two children. The lit- I tie folks Buffered severely from the i cold while we were delayed for 1 more than an hour, taking our turn I with the other victims to be sprayed ;and fumigated. Here they required ! us to unpack and expose every dud we had with us taking away irom us two gunny sacks in which the Meyers" had the odds and ends pick ed up when they were loaving their home. These goods we were com pelled to dump on the floor of the car, one of their rules being no sack allowed to pass quarantine. The foot and mouth disease has thrown a wet blanket over the . industries nf California. liuilding fl ; operations are at a standstill. I We passed one ranch in central I California that was quarantined, where with a steam shovel they had just dug a trench, or more prop erly speaking, a grave, 20 feet wide and 60 feet long and about 10 feet deep the floor was then covered with quick lime, and an entire dairy herd of 165 holstein cows were forced In and shot and covered with quick lime and buried. We were informed that the owner of this herd( some of which were valued at more than $1,000 a head) will receive from the slate J 8.1 8 per head in full payment. This is only one of many cases we learned of passing through infected districts. None of the products raised In this state are permitted to pass out. This applies to all fresh vegetables as well as fruit. The conditions down here - are much more serious than you, in Oregon realize. THIS BRIGHT DABY GIRL Brought Joy to Home. Mrs. Price's Health Restored by Lydia E. Pinkham s Vege table Compound Scootac.Pa. "1 never felt like work ing, and when I would try to do any worn standingon my feet, 1 would just drag around all day long. At times I would have terrible pains and would be in bed three or four days. 1 was in this condition ubout year when 1 saw Lydia E. Pinkham Vegetable Com pound advertised in the papers. 1 had heard different women say it was good for women troubles, and my aunt thought it would neip me as it naa hhiped her. So I took the Vegetable Compound and it brought things right, and 1 was in good shape before I became a mother again. 1 believe it helps at birth, too, as with both my other babies 1 suffered great deal more than with this one. I thank you a thousand times for the good your medicine has done me. It has surely made our home a happy one." Mrs. Robert Pkice, Scootac, via Lockhaven, Pa. The "Eugene Fruit Growers' As sociation Is a splendid illustration of co-operative eflort rightly handl ed. From a small beglnnfng it passed the million dollar point In sales last year. It handled over 16.000,000 pounds of fruits and veg etables and sold canned goods to the value of 748.0O. It handled more than three and a half million pounds of prunes; over three mil lion pounds of carrots: three mil lion pounds of beets and over a mil lion pounds of loa-nn berries, be sides larse quantities of all othrr fruits and vegetables. The success of this association Is due largely to Two tlitiir zt.( manat'i'ttipnt und loyalty on the part of producers. It Is of great benefit to the growers of Lane county, and It could almos. be duplicated In any diversified farming countv In the state. Fourteen livestock cooperative selling associations under one man agement are making bit successful growths from the central manage ment In Chicago, and while organ ized but two years, ttioir reports show remarkable advances. Last year this, association handled nearly 5,000,000 animals, nearly 70.000 car loads. In 1923 the earnings were 4377,709. Oregon should have a like state selling association, and the cattlemen- should handle their own business. Over one hundred and thirty-four million Pacific roast eggs were handled through cooperative selling agencies this year. There are flvo member associations to the parent association, which is the Pacific Coast Egg" Producers Cooperative. The members are the state associa tion of Portland; the Washington association of Seattle, and the asso ciations of San l'ranclsi'O, Los An geles and San Diego. These Asso ciations have had remarkable growths and have merged into one large selling association. Tho middle west potato-growing states are becoming solidly organ ized Into county and state coopera tive selling agencies. The potato growing counties of Oregon should organize, and later merge Into a state association. Tbo potato grad ing and Inspection law Is rapidly bringing the state into the coast markets for firHt clasB stock and with organized soiling agencies this could become a- big state industry. Requests have come to the state market scent for help to pass a grading and Inspection law for the onion growers. The lurser growers realize that if thare was compul sory grading there would be better markets and prices for the product. The prune growers of Oregon, cui up Into about 15 separate organiz ations which fight each other for markets, have now under way one big union ond a central marketing bodv to handle all the-products. It is believed by the growers at the head of the combination movement that every acre of prunes in the state can be signed up for such an has rapidly Increased in this suite and if the product could be profit ably marketed it would bo one oi the leadinc Industries, but unless something along the lino can be speedily accomplished many or chards will be grubbed out or abandoned. T PROTECTI WEEK IS DIFFERENT "Forest Protection Week Is dif ferent from all other 'weeks' in that it does not benefit any one class of people but on tbe other hand bene fits all of us here In the Northwest," said Major Jno. D. Guthrie, secre tary of the Oregon State-wide Com mittee on Forest Protection Week. "What would Oregon be without its forests? What would Washing ton look like robbed of Its green mantles of trees? And yot fire, the outlaw, can turn Its greeness into a dead black. "Forest Protection Week has now been observed for five years and each year with greater success for nil citizens of these two states, 'the woodlot of the nation', are gradually coming to know what their forests are worth. The for ests are not only sources of lum ber, afford recreation for millions, but furnish pure water and 'while coal.' " remarked Major Guthrie. "The public generally Is fed up on special weeks, but editors, teach ers, and business men have told me that Forest Protection Week is one of the really wonh while ones, said Mr. Guthrie. The program for the week Is be ing handled by special committees In Oregon and Washington. These committees are headed by State Foresters in these states and have, representatives of the lumber In dustry, forest schools, fire protec tive associations.
