The patrol Is made up at present of seven small gun-boat, but their draught Is designed particularly for deep sea work and they are greatly hindered by the Yangtie snoais. Four are old Spanish gunboats cap tured by Admiral Dewey at Manila bay. The new patrol Is designed to pro tect the great flood of commerce be twen Shanghai and the up-river ports. At present it is necessary to put American marles on the mer chant boats to protect them from the river snipers.
