Downen, a former resident of this city, was killed ' yesterday afternoon in a fall from a building upon which he was working in Se attle, according to a message receiv ed by his sieter,' Mrs. H. G. Wilson. Mr. Downen has been employed for a short time as a workman upon a tall building, and yesterday slipped in some manner and fell several stories being instantly killed. M-i. Wilson left last night for Seattle to attend the funeral services. Mr. Downen leaves a wife and three chil dren. His oldest son Is In Honolulu at the present, time. The Unipqua edited by Mary Reams was awarded an honor able mention In the contest sponsored by the Beaver annual at the Oregon Agricultural college for the best year book in the state. Competition was keen as there were 28 books entered representing all parts of the Slate, and many from high schools much larger than Roseburg. The Salem High School won first prize and the silver loving cup with their annual The Clarion, a 215 page book with a Malloy leather cover. The systematic plan of make up, the excellent art work, and the fact that $100 was cleared in spite of a (2300 expense was In the opinion of the Judges tho reasons hy Salem High won first place. The other honorable mentions were Franklin High of Portland "Post," Oregon City High "Hesperian," Eu gene High "Eugenian," and Corvallis Higb's "Chintlmini." The Dalles High "Steelhond" was commanded by the judges upon the excellent quality of the printing which was done by stu dents in the school shop. The Mill City high school school with a Btu- dent body of 27 put out a book that compared favorably with many high school annuals supported by several times the number of Btudents. . The features of the Roseburg an nual which won favor with the judges were, the brown Insert pages between sections, the general literary work, and the athletics and jokes sections. The points followed in deciding the winners were originality 25 per cent, makeup 25 per cent, content 25 per cent, and engraving, printing, and cover 25 per cent. The Judges were Professor Frank L. Snow of the de partment of Industrinl journalism, Howard P. Lewis of Marshfield edi tor of the' 1924 Beaver, Wayne K. Davis of Pomerdy Wash:, editor of the 1923 Beaver, Homer L. Roberts of Corvallis, editor of the Daily Bar ometer, and Lindaey H. Spight of Hood River, President of Sigma Delta Chi professional Journalistic frater nity.
