Whatooni, being a border county. it agenti out In on much of the booie-running south from tbe Can adian line Into Washington. Prohi bition oflfcers declare that more boots la run through Whatoom than through any other county In the state. In booze and narcotic smuggling cases, the county must pay all the costs of detection and trial, except where the accused is convicted and muvt stand all the expense of prose cution. The latter occasion, however, Is rare. Two main highways and two pas senger railroads enter the county from British Columbia. As Vancou ver Is a sort of baBe for the whiskey-running gentry, It Is easier to try to go through W hatoom man throueh Stevens county, the only other Washington county with a trunk International railroad. The roada through Htevens county are not as good for whiHkey caravans as those throng)! Whatoom. It Is pretty hard on Whatoom, Some wag has suggested that all counties bordering on Canada and nil bordering on Mexico, where the Whatoom situation prevails, organise for mutual defense and fores some body else to stand the burden of stemming the booze flood. Whatoom this humorist says. Is like the little boy In Holland who stuck his arm in the hole in the dike and taved the lowlands from thw ocean flood. Whatoom has an Idea of what must have happened to the little boy'a arm, o ATTENTION CO. "D" During Ir. CONSCIENCE FUND INCREASING Conlribptions to the "conscience" fund of the Southern Pacific Com pany, rnnging In nmounis from one cent to J2II0, totnled 303.47 for 1S22 according to a report Just Issued by the railroad. This Is the largest yearly contribution to this fund since Its establishment in 1907, the report stated. From 1907 to 1922 Inclusive, a total of 1 1408.14 has been remitted to the company by persons obeying tbe dictates of their conscience, A majority of the remittances have been made to cover rides on freight trains. There are many other varied and Interesting fraudu lent dealings related and in practi cally every incident It Is mentioned that this squaring of accounts has been prompted through the desire to uphold religious belief. "I was overpaid one cent on my paycheck and as an honest employe I return It," was the explanation accompanying the smallest remit tance. The largest sum, $20u, came from a rellgluos source at Ogden, I'tah. The amount had been turned In to tho church aa "conscience money." Six cents in postage stamps was sent "from a child who failed to pay fare" and one dollar was remit ted by a former employe who ack nowledged "filching a small amount of money on storage, etc. some years ago while agent for the com pany." Six years ngo nn Oakland man shorj of change walked out to Oak land Pier and then sneaked throuah the gate onto the ferry. He recently I sent In ten cents to cover the fare. I Another remittance came from all I employe who stated thai he had tak en material from the company and sent along $3.60 to relieve his troub led mind. ILLNESS IN THE NIGHT?
