those interested in the "national
game" plays it himself and thus gets

Baseball Is a fine sport, but it baa
its limitations under the present
system. Generally speaking, we
take onr exercise vicariously, w hat
is needed in this country is a nation
al sport In which large numbers will

In Portland, Is of consequence to all
states and motorisits. It Is a con
ference that can achieve much for
comfort and convenience of auto
mobile owners.
The purpose of the session is to
make traffic laws in all coast states
uniform. That Is an accomplishment
worth while and easily attainalilo. It
prevents trouble in all states and
aids motorisits to obey the law.
It is neither pleasing or wise for
Oregon to have a different code of
traffic laws from California. It
means a Callfornlan in Oregon is
likely to violate the lnw. It means
that an Oregonlan in Washington is
likely to violate the law. It may
mean accidents and it certainty
means trouble in courts and incon
venience to travelers.

If there was ever any doubt about
the tax Issue being the main thing
at stake in the ficht over the gov
ernorship that doubt has been re
moved. The fact that timber owners,
lumber magnates and others are put
ting up $25,000 to defeat Waller
Pierce because he wishes to reduce
or equalize the tax hurden means
somelhlng. It means they fear Mr.
Pierce's election will mean a greater
equalization of the tax burden anil
that the timber and lumber interests
will have to take a heavier share of
the load now carried almost entirely
by the farmer and home owner.
Those men realize that Mr. Pierre
means business and that if elected
he will endeavor to carry out his
campaign declarations. They fear he
will succeed. Otherwise why are
they raising $ 2 5.o for the Olrotl
campaign chest when the Olcott for
ces are already supposed to have all
the money they need for legitimate
expenses?
