Fire that lisinated In the Antlers hotel at tie Rlwr destroyed that structure I a number of nearby buildings 1 spread to the small timber on ' hills back of the town. Details re meagre until the arrival of Ku- ' nt 10:30 last night of William nsworth, of this city, who wltnes- kl the fire. The first news canto the forest telephone line from IcKenzie bridge, across the moun- s to Onkrldge thence to Eugene for the line along the upper Wil- tte river- I The first Information received Ihere was to the effect that only, the hotel had burned. Later in the ev ening word came that the entire town had been wiped out but fur ther information received over the telephone from McKenzle bridge was that only a few buildings aside from the notel worn destroyed. Mr. Ainsworth brought the news that the howl, the cottages adjoining it and one residence back of It were burned. The wind carried the fire to the mountains a, few rods back of the hotel and Smith L. Taylor, Cascade forest ranger had a forco of men at work endeavoring to prevent its spread to green timber. Nelson F. Macduff, supervisor of the forest said last night that in case of a northwest wind the fire would be carried to a tract of gre?n timber not far back of the town on the Blue river. This timber Is privately owned. Mr. Ainsworth stated that the fire started on the roof of the hotel, ev idently from a spnrk. As all of the i men about the hu'ldini? were on the river fishing Utile could be done fainilv extinguish the flames nmiouKti the hotel had a good water system with two lines ot hose. o THE PEOPLE OF .r6SEBURG Pick What You Wish All the delicacies of the season displayed before you, Cafeteria style. "What Is thy servant that thou shouldst look upon such a dead dog as 1 am." II. Sam uel 9.8. A dead dog that's what Mephl bosheth said of himself. A king's son that's the way Da vid treated him. Here Is (he story: David, tho king, had conquered his enemies and was looking around for a chance to serve his friends and ho found that there was a poor lanei son of his old friend Jonathan out at Lo-debar. So he sent for him and when Mephlbosheth fell before him expecting death ns a grandson of Saul who persecuted David for years from sheer Jealousy when he fell as a suppliant, David said, "Fear not, I havo given yon all tne possession of; your grandfather and 35 servants to till your farm, and as for you, ns long as you live you will eat at my table. That was mercy and the shock of it made Mephlbosheth feel like a dead dog. Put that Isn't a circumstance to w'.nt God for Christ's sake has dono f ir you and me. And yet, we have no conception of Ills mercy. You and I were deader than Jonathan's son Was and have been more ungrateful than a dog could be; and the Eternal Cod sent Jesus down here for us.
