Oregon, under the Act of March 1 1879. liOSKilllU,, Ollh .(. AI'I'.IL III. . "PETTING . . . .. . . . , Many parents feel .distunx-d ners said to prevail among the young people, with tlie mushy ten dency of some girls to hold themselves cheap. A chief purpose of the family automobile in these times, it is claimed, is to take the young crowd out into the dark country where they have a loving time on their so-called "petting . It may be remarked that there is nothing new about this, and i that not all the doings of the older generation would look well j under a modern electric light. However, there is a certain type of girl who is not able to win success by a bright wit, or buoyant enthusiasm, or ability to play games well. If she holds herself a little cheap and common, and does not object to free treatment, fslie acquires a certain popular ity among the boy flapper type. She gets many invitations to sit on the back seat of the family automobile on nocturnal occasions. The folks who want to see young people develop along clean lines with high purposes and ambitions, are sorry to see them acquire premature desires of this kind. Those who are active in such pursuit of the other sex, are not likely to be the ones who are winning out on the field of sports, or ranking high in their studies, or winning attentions in the business field. There is something abnormal about premature sex interest, and it tends to dull ambition and create lack of interest in achievement. Parents who want their children to attain real success will caution them about free manners, and try to divert their interest to more wholesome ideas. The girl who acquires a reputation of commonness is spoken' of lightly in masculine circles, which ad mire those who have some self restraint and reserve. THE WORK OF THE Many parents find in these times that their children have gotten beyond their control. Some estrange them by over sever ity, others fail through weakness of assertion. To assist such parents in dealing with children having a ten dency toward wildness, the city of Los Angeles has established a city mother's bureau, where perplexed parents can obtain help. The city mothers try sympathy, encouragement, and personal at tention (o the needs of each case, and make an effort to win these young people back to parents and community. These city mothers find that one great cause of delinquency is tho unprotected home, where both father and mother go out to work and leave the children to their own devices. The ideal home has the mother at hand to direct the children, but if she must go out, the ctiildren need some wholesome and absorbing activity to take up their attention. AMERICANIZATION WORK. The chamber of commerce of the city of Rochester, N. Y., has sot a fine vxample of good work in Americanization. It has an education committee that recently conducted a "learn English drive." There were 250 teams organized to secure recruits to learn English, and 2000 aliens pledged themselves to attend these cfasses. .' The "know your country" committee held six meetings dtir. iiig January among the foreign population, attended by 5500 peo ple. Five big dinners are given annually for newly naturalized citizens, business men mingle with ami welcome tho new citizens, and 1000 of the latter attended such dinners in 1921. To accom plish the Americanization of our alien groups, personal friendship toward these people must be shown, and they should fool that the old residents' welcome them and desire to see them attain success. o THE PROFITS OF RETAIL TRADE. The Harvard bureau of research, an unprejudiced and scien tific authority, recently investigated tho costs of retail trade, through the accounts of (!(! retail stores. It found that out of every dollar paid by the consumer, the retailor paid 72 cents for the goods. For salaries and wages 1:1.0 cents were paid. Other expenses, including rents, taxes, interest, advertising, etc., were 12 cents. The merchants made less than two cents out of every dollar. An investigation like this should undeceive people who think that the average retail merchant is overcharginir the nubtic.
