MEANING OF WORD '"FLAPPER."
Some people inquire as to the meaning; of the yvoro! ''flapper,"
lpplied of late to young girls of a certain type! The most common
! ;xpIanation is that it arose from the slovenly fad prevailing
, unong many of these girls, pf Jeaving overshoes unbuckled, so
;hat they flap as the girls walk. But such girls were called flap
pers in England long before this .notion obtains its hold, so this
:an hardly be the correct explanation. The dictionary defines a
. lapper as a young bird which has not yet learned to fly. Prob
' ibly it was the sportsmen who .first .called the girls by this name.j
is their first efforts to achieve their place in the world seemed a
lttle suggestive of the early blundering flights of the game birds.
These girls may seem awkward, but they have all the charm of
outh and enthusiasm. After they become more sophisticated
hey .will be less genuine. Modern life makes the inexperience of
he flapper somewhat more obvious, because she is less in retire
nent than a former generation was. The women'of former years
ere trained to live lives of more reserve and seclusion, tending
:o develop personalities of a neut, ral ,type,'who broke no lays of
-aste or conventionality, but were .not very interesting. -The
nodern flapper goes to the other extreme. She is educated for
jusiness competition, and must meet men on even terms, and she
laturally becomes familiarly acquainted with , a jot of rhen. 1 She
oses something of the elusive charm of the former generation, but
ier .buoyancy and activity and good cheer win friends. She iio
onger emulates the violet, and sometimes is in danger of becom
ng' as conspicuous as the sunflower. She may' seem jioydenish,
mt if she has good breeding she develops refinement, without los
ng.the initiative that is characteristic of her age.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF BROTHER OSTRICH.
There's something almost human about the ostrich, father

Who is the most economical housekeeper? The woman who
buys haphazard, or the one who reads advertising and puts her
household purchasing on a business basis '
There's no denying the great value of advertising to those
who read it. It protects you against fraud and inferiority. It tells
you what is new and good, making you a wise buyer. It saves you
money by pointing out for your' consideration only the best pro
ducts. ' , ' .
Read the advertisements don't be an ostrich.
France, Holland and other of the lesser naval powers strong
ly defend the use of submarines in warfare, on the ground that
Ihey are the weapon with which a weaker nation can defend itself,
without having to build costly dreadnaughts at an expense of
$10,000,000 apiece. But the world pays an awful price for the
privilege of using submarines. It is a mean and dirty form of
warfare. slt attacks women and children and old men, equally
with the fighters. And besides that it prostrates the shipping in
dustry. The peaceful merchant vessels on which the nations de
pend for commerce and food are indiscriminately sent to the bot
tom of the sea. The submarine cannot always tell what kind of a
flap it is attacking, nor what kind of freight and passengers its
victims are carrying. Submarines ought to be outlawed, and weak
nations should bo protected by international agreement, rather
than by using so mean a weapon.

owner of which does nothing to keep

It Is an eyesore to en thrnneh the
Willamette Valley and see the home

Often you can find two or three acres
producing nothing at all. All farm
and home orchards in the state are
in a had way and many of them in
the valley are a menace to the com
mercial orchardists."
Most home orchardB are too large,
thinks Professor Hartman. An or
cbord of a dozen trees well taken
care of Is better than several acres
Of trees given no attention. Trees in
a home orchard may be Bprayed and
trees kept clean at an average coat
