Relief For Fish
Hatcheries Urged

credited to hatchery fund districts

Tho fish commission, which spon
sored thw bill, points out that unless
the legislature passes the measure
the Industry will be set back so ma
terially that recovery will be almost
Impossible. Many of the hatcheries
and ponds wvre completely wiped
out. according to members of the
commission.
"Ponds nt Kagle creek and Tanner
creek were entirely swept out by the
rigors of the recent storm," said
Representative E. N. Hurd of Clat
sop county, who introduced the bill.
"The fish industry Is one of the larg
est in ttie state. Hundreds of men
and women are employed and It
would be criminal not to vole funds
for the rebuilding and restoration of
the hatcheries."
Hatcheries along the Trask river,
Alsea at tidewater, Tillamook, Bon
neville, C'latskanle, Santiam, Ump
qua and Siletz were all damaged. In
addition to the Eagle and Tanner
creek ponds:
The bill provides that the state
treasurer draw warrants for . the
amount on the state treasury, pay
able out of tho general fund. The
sum of $21,0(10 is to be. allotted to
hatchery fund district No. 1 and
J-13,500 to hatchery fund district
No. 2.
