Mrs. A. K. Kent has left for Mon
revla, California, where she will
spend the coming winter. Mrs. Kent
spent last winter in that vicinity, and
improved her health considerably,

Marriage licenses were issued to
day to Chester N. Purkerson and Al-
freda Garner, of Yoncalla, and to J.
W. Farlr-lgh of Portland and Arline
H. Bunch of this city.

evening to Join his wife, who is vis
iting with her daughter, Mrs. W. L.
McGeorge. After a stay of three
weeks in the metropolis they will

tion. The campaign is to last unui
Armistice Day. November 11. at
which time it will be brought to a
close and the new members will be
entertained at the armory on that
day. As an introductory move In
the drive for members, every mem
ber of Vmpqua Post of the American
Legion will be sent a card urging
them to assist the girls by having
their mothers, wives and sisters join
the Auxiliary. In this way everyone
who Is eligible can be reached. The
leaders In the campaign are Miss
Jane Wharton, Mrs. Bert O. Bates
and Mrs. James T. Goodman. All

DEATH IS INVESTIGATED;
SAD CONDITION FOUND.
Coroner M. E. Rltter was called to
Canyonvllle early this morning to
investigate the death of Albert J.
Davis, who died very suddenly of
pulmonary tuberculosis. The cor
onor found a very sad case. The
man had been ill for some time and
the family being without funds, were
unable to provide medical assistance.
There was no food and the wife and
three little children were hungry
and cold. Provisions were Immedi
ately procured for them and an ef
fort will be made to care for the
widow and her children. The de
ceased was 44 years of age and has
been trying to eke out an existence
for himself and family on a small
farm near Canyonvllle.

VEHICLE LAW VIOLATORS
ARRESTED AND FIXED.
Three arrests for violation of-the
traffic laws were made today by
Stale Trari'W Officer J. J. McMahon.
D. H. Carpenter was fined $25 and
costs for speeding in Roseburg.
Claude .Inmcs. of Myrtle Creek, was
fined $2T nnd costs for speeding
through Drain, and James Cooper
was fined $15 and costs for allowing
bis minor grandson to drive a truck
for hire. Costs In each case amour, t
ed to $5. The fines were assessed by
Justice of the Peace George Jones, in
whose court the offenders appeared.
