the law of the I'nited States by the
Bergdoll family mem tiers of the com

proper punishment for his crimes.
No case of desertion or defiance
of the United States army has the

none showed such a determination
to belittle the authorities of this

such action the notorious character
of the case and the necessity . for
making an example of a rich deser
ter whose entire family conspired to
escape the law requiring military
service and which has In other ways
defied and disgraced the authority of
the federal government.

Dennis Kussell was captured In
three places yesterday evening Just
a few minutes after the Jury hud re
turned a verdict that th body at
:he morgue was that of the hermit.
Sheriff Stunner first received tele
phone tall from Salem to the effect
that a man reporting to be a former
resident of Roseburg had brought in
i man whom he said was Dennis
Kussell. Upon investigation it was
round that the "suspect" measured 6
feet 9 inches in height, had red hair
and was named Johnson. Similar
reports were received from Grants
Pass and Ashland, but the suspects
In no way answered the description
of Kussell, and were ordered released.

Car Turns Turtle
On Roberts Mt.
The Chalmers car which turned
turtle on Roberts Mountain yester
day was the property of Mr. nnd
Vrs. Donaldson, and two children,
who reside In California, and who
were enroute to Roseburg to visit
for a few days with their cousin Rus
sell Harness of this city. They also
expected to visit Portland and other
northern points. Tho Donaldsons
mistook the highway signs nt Myrtle
Creek, with tho result thnt they
took the old road out, comln over
Roberts Mountain, the car meeting
with the accident on this side. Mr.
Donaldson, who was driving the car.
Is unable to explain exactly how the
accident happened. None of the
family were Injured although all
were pinned under the overturned
car. Much damage was done to the
automobile ond the Donaldsons will
remnln In this city at the Russell
Harness home until It Is repaired.
