Kyle, former Free Methodist preacher
and Lorln Williamson, were today
sentenced to six years In the Leaven-
'worth prison on a charge of robbing
a mall pouch containing 1189,000 at
Mount Vernon, 111., on January 14th.

Hold Luncheon
The three federated clubs In this
district, which are tbe Mental Cul
ture club. Music club and the Garden
Valley Improvement club, met this
noon at the Umpqua to enjoy a lunch
eon, given In honor of Mrs. Ida Cal
lahan, state president ol tbe Feder
ated Clubs.
Mrs. Cullahan Is a former resident
here, having taught school here a
number of years ago, and always feels
perfectly at home upon her arrival in
the city. She Is a brother of B. F.
Burnett, a resident of Canyonvllle.
Her talk at the lpncheon this noon
was upon federation and its work. She
attended tbe bi-ennial convention at
Des Moines last June, at which time
all plans were laid for the State Fed
erated ' clubs. Tbe president of the
state club then reached the other
clubs, by means of visits and by at
tending district conventions.
There are three principles which
they hold as their motto or goal, and
these are Thrift, Child Welfare,
Americanism and Community Service.
Community service, says Mrs. Calla
han, is one of the very biggest de
partments and means the arousing of
the spirit of pride in the community,
better citizenship,, and democracy.
The Federated Clubs are also civic
and literary. There are about six
thousand women in the Federated
Clubs In Oregon, and about two and
one half million in the general feder
ation. A big feature of the federation
is the scholarship loan, which enables
women to finish their education, and
is a loan without Interest. It helps
to, make women Independent.
There were .about forty guests
seated at the luncheon this noon
eager to hear the message of Mrs.
Clanahan. They were entertained
'with a vocal selection by Mrs. Brand
and a few marimba numbers from Mr.
Suchow. Mrs. Clanahan will be uc
companled to the district convenilor
at Ashland tomorrow by Mrs. Wm
Bell, of this city.'
