Phone Rate Lift Proposal Sought TOIlTLAND, Dec. 22. Decided differences of opinion as to the prop er time to tamper with existing tele phone rates, in view of the general downward trend of production costs in all lines, developed yesterday at the hearing held before the Oregon public service commission for con uration of an application by the Pa cific Telephone & Telegraph com pany for a general Increase of 30 per cent over lis present rates through out this stale. Willie officials of the company, as outlined in the opening statement of James T. Shaw, general counsel, tes lllled that the plant Is inadequate to cope wilh the business now ottered It, and that further extensions ana improvements arc essential to the welfare of the enlerprise and the progress of Oregon, the city of Port land, as represented by W. P. La- Kochr, city attorney, and the repre sentatives of various other communi ties, emphatically protested the logic of the application. It Is declared by the company that the cost of necessary extensions and improvements approximate $5,000.- 000, and that rates muHt be advanced to a point where returns on the in vestment will render the securities of the company attractive to purchasers. In almost every Instance, It was de clared, and attested by exhibits, the operations of the telephone system in Oregon communities are oeing conducted at a loss, vllh a deficit of ItiKl.OOO for the present year, and an estimated deficit of $824,000 for 1021. Lester Coates, who has been working at Powers will spend Xmas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Coates.
