Vet Commanders Have a Meeting A meeting of thtj commander of various veteran organizations In the mute was held at the Portland hotel at noon on December 17th int. Those present were: John W. Cut lena. J rand Commander of the In dian War Veterans; J. T. Hutler, Department Commander of the Grand Army of the Kenubllc; Major Clarence II. Hotchkiss. Department Commander. United SpaniKh War Veterans; John V. Jones, Junior vice-commander of the National Or Kaniration of Veterans of Foreign Wars; and Major William S. Gilbert, Department commander of the Am erican Uk1oii. An organization was formed to be known as the Commander's Council, to be composed of the Department Commanders of all Veteran Organi zations In Oregon, and a committee was selected to draft suitable by laws and constitution for the or ganization which will embody all of the principles of the various Vet eran Organizations, and not conflict with their constitution or their bylaw: I'pon being elected to office, the Department Commanders of all Vet eran Organizations will automatical ly become a member of the Com mander's Council. Major Hotchkiss was chosen an president for the ensuing year and ohn W. Jones as adjutant. The next meeting is to he held at the call of the president, for the purpose of con sidering the adoption of the Consti tution and by-laws to be prepared by the committee recently appointed. The condition of the Soldier's Home at Hoseburg, was discussed. and every member present was of the opinion that Is was being inade quately supported by the State and went on "record as using their best efforts to have the Veterans organ! zations which they represent peti tion the legislature to make suffi- ient appropriations to put it. on a basis with the Soldier's home In other states. His story of Itoseliurg and vicinity starts with the following lines.
