BY IDAH McCLONE CIBSON A TAXtil.KII HKKIX. "And now my poor mother is dead, 1 whispered as Mr. Halsey panned. Oh, I do not thing It Is fair that she bTiould be cheated of her lover now. "Ono of tho reasons sho was so triad to die the only reason she was content to leave me was because atlie thought my father was dead and I hut she was going to see him on I he other, side. "You know she said that 'where I am going there Is no murrlage or giving In marriage and over there Hob and I will be toether again' and now that I know she Is still alive I would rather never see my futher than to reel that the soul of my mother was vainly hunting him through space. I suddenly broke down in sobs lhat I could not control. Mr. lialsey put his arms about me and I frankly clung to him. "Iiear Kenneth's dud," I said un consciously giving my old childish name, "you have reully been the only futher I huve ever knowu. And even though I should never see my father, I would be happier if I knew I hut he vias somewhere with my mo ther. She will nut be happy In eaveu without him and she had so little happiness on earth." Mr. llulsey put his hand under my chin and raised my face, so that he could look Into my eyes. "1 wiKh to Heuven, Ann, you were my daughter," he Bald. "You know, my chllil, that i admired your mo ther greatly. Without disrespect to your mother's memory or to my best frientl -your father, I think i muy suy this. "I huve sometimes thought that there Is one greater sacrifice than when one 'gives up his life for an other,' and thut is when one gives up his love to anolher. One Is a mom entary act and the other a long tragedy. "Your futher was always my best friend and 1 ITured for him bo much thut i could nut even let my regurd for your mother stund between us. Hut I died a thousand deaths the few short mouths thut I had to wit ness the great happiness of your par enis. I flatter myself that 1 did not snow my hurt to either of them, lor you know 1 had given your mo iher up over two years before, and to effectively put a barrier between 1 had married Ken s mother. Shortly before the trouble which In volved your mother and futher came up, my wife hud died and Ken was t'orn. Looking upon your parents' happiness, my loneliness became al most unbearable and I fled to trance, where I stayed until Ken and 1 came, as you remember, to tlve In the 'big houses,' as you cbil- li'en called it. "Your mother probably never told you. my dear, but again I asked her to marry me, and again she refused. saying, 'Rlehurd, I wonder If I can imiko you understand the complex heart of woman. A woman who hns loved a man us I huve loved Ann's father, cun never feel love In all Its wild passion and all 'ts great ten- lerness for anyone else. " 'A woman's memory of her lover may blur when Times smudging lingers press upon her brain, tint her love, which has became a part of her soul, cannot ho separated from her without bringing death to all her emotions. ' '.No woman can forget the Joy or the aijiiny for agony nlso holds memory In thrall that has been hers, and until she forgets sho can not really love again. I would feel, my friend, that I was not fair lo you If 1 should come to you with less than I gave to Uoli. and I will never be able to give any one else that." I am repeating your mother's words. Ann, ao that you can realize how much I have wanted you for my luugnier. And I also want you to know that your mother and 1 had voiced our hopes to each other that nine (lay tier daughter and my son would find that thev loved each ill her. "I have never understood whv you two did not full In love with urn other. Iiu' I snii'ose it was not to tie.' I was almost ready to tell him lhat his sun was the only love or my mother's daughter. 1 felt my luce hot as the thought came to me. and I hurled my race deeper In the hallow of Mr. llulsey's arm. I knew 1 hud (inly to rnise my race again lo his to huve him know the truth. Kale plays some cruel jokes. This man had been in love with my mo ther and could not hdve her ror his wife, and I was in love with his son yes, I confessed It to myself and he had married another girl. Hut the web of our lives was not yet spun would the pattern ever change? Ti m in irrtiw timce's Ktil I y. l.tHIKINti til.Ass m:vs. It hns been so long since anything was written from this place that It will be necessary to give the readers r liosotiiirg's big daily their hear ings. We are located eight miles southwest ol Koseburg in the most heaittiful and also one of the most productive valleys on the entire globe. In fact we have frequently heard the valley referred to as the one time Garden of Eden, where we are trying to live without eating of tlio fruits of the tree of knowledge of good and evil; where we grow fruits of all kinds, livestock, grain and hay. and where we have no ex tremes of weather conditions and wnere tne people greet their neigh 1 btirs and wear the smile of prosper- lty. peace and contentment. We have atwut seventy new people m the val- Icy as a consequence of different land deals during the past year; we gladly extend the hand of fellowship to these strangers. Mr. and Mrs. Nlckens and daugh ter dlfi!hlfullv entertained a number of their friends last week In honor of Mrs. Delia Short and Miss Kettu Meredith of our grade schools. Another happy occasion was the party given by Mrs. Veda Meredith at her home in honor or ine return of Miss Gladys Morgan. Music and social converse with a very appetiz ing repast concluded the huppy event. J. C. Moore Is home again after a month's visit with his son In Ari zona. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mundt are visit ing In California Ibis winter. Prof. J. T. Lee. of our high school, will spend the holidays with his mother in our sister state on the south. Mrs. Delia Short will spend her vacation in Itosehurg, while Miss Meredith will visit home folks at Dlllard. There will be a Christmas tree and program at the church here on the 23rd. This Is not Christ's blrihduy. however, the change being made to uccommodute our teachers, who are Helping with the program. Generally our rouds are In good condition, but there are two or three stretches of road, when the water Is high, that are in a deplorable condi tion. Our Ten Mile mail man some times has to leave his mail route al together and go by the new bridge at Morgan s. This bad piece of road was changed by petition last spring even the fences being changed, but our county court has been dilatory busy juggling figures and our road district is getting barely enough to place what has been styled "a shirt-tail full of gravel" on the road in about one thousund different places. Such rot as the taxpayers do get stung into them. Our road dis trict placed a five mill tax to Its credit this month and we (the tax payers) are going to know where the money goes, as this tax was levied for a permanent piece of road be tween the Looking Glass store and the eastern part of the district and not for patch work.j J. E. Williams was buried here yesterday. Mr. Williams formerly resided here and had many friends in this locality, who deeply feel his loss. X. X. Mrs. Ilninnt lenv Mrs. M. S. Ilanini left this morn ing for Eugene, where sho will be joined next week by Mr. llanim, who holds the position or city rchool su perintendent. They will remain over the Christmas holidays with Mr. Hutnm's relatives in Eugene. Advertise In the News-Review, DR, R. P.
