The date mark the 300th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers on the "stein and rock-bound coast" of New Eng land. It In to be observed with spe cial ceremonies In the Knglish com munities from which the 1'llKilius came and In those localities In New England most Intimately associated with their history In this country. Their coining meant as much lo the rest of the country, however, and they are rightfully honored through out the land. History portrays those early fathers as a group stern and Intoler ant, in spite of the fact that they fled to the new world to escape Intoler ance. Yet if we read their own ac counts of their struggles to preserve freedom and to wrest a living from the wilderness to. which they had come, we learn that they were as human as ourselves, that they suf fered and endured much for the sake of the principles they revered, that they had couruge and fulth and loy alty. Their wilderness widened out Into a fruitful and pleasant land. Sub sequent generations have not had to fight the same obstacles nor fear the name perils which confronted the rilgrlm settlers. Hut the Ideals and principles which guided and upheld them th roue h their difficult days are still worthy of holding and will still guide and uphold the nation, if It re members them fuithfully. American fliers composing the Kosviusko squudron of the Polish army have had many opportunities to bomb the train of six cars which General Bu denny, the bolshevik cavalry leader, used as headquarters at the front; but they always refused to do so be cause they know his wife and baby lived on board the train. On several occasions when the Budenny special was located by the Americans they knew pretty well that the cavalry commander was at hiB traveling home for a visit with his wife and youngster, but they always let pass the chance to do him or his train damage. It was reported some time ago that Dudenny had been wounded by a bomb dropped by one of the Ameri can fliers while he was engaged in one of his spectacular raids on the southern Polish front before the ar mistice was declared. It was also said that he had taken up arms against tbe reds and that he might Join forces with General W ran gel. General Budenny is ft Kuban cos sack and was a sergeant-major in the old imperial Russian army.
