Armistice Day Is
Legal Holiday
Many inquiries are being racelv
ed as to whether or not the stores
are to close on Armistice Day and
whether or not the schools will be
dismissed upon that holiday. Gov
ernor Olcott proclaimed Armistice
Day a legal holiday In the state of
Oregon, and consequently all hanks,
business houses and offices will oe
closed. Schools will also be dismiss
ed by order of the Htate school su
perintendent, who yesterday notified
county superintendent Brown to close
the schools In Douglas county on that
day. In order that the day may be
even more thoroughly -set aside In

$121,623.61 dorlved from the Na
tional forest business la tbe state In
the fiscal year 120. according to
figures furnished by forest officials
here. This amount Is 25 percent of
me total receipts from the national

ever since I had the 'flu' back In
September, 1918. I had lost twenty
eight pounds In weight, felt good-
for nothing all tne time anil was so
weak I could barldy do my -work.
Fur months, I never knew what a
good night's sleep meant, and 1 was
ho nervous I would Jump out of my
chair at the slightest noise. My
stomach was so upset I couldn't eat
a single meal In peace, for as soon
as I had finished. I would bloat up
with Has and feel so tight and stuff
ed up. T thourht I would choke to
death. Many a time I was In such
pain and misery I walked the floor
all night long, and finally I was tola
that an operation was my only hope.
"Hut I made ud my mind to first

reeling better and already I have

weight and am still gaining right
along. My nerves are as strong as

I suddosu I must have been very
dull or very young and unsophisti
cated, because I did not understand
what he said. I supposed "check
girl" meant cashier work and I never
had heard the phrase "you re on
before, but I decided to be game and
said:
I shall be very glad to work for
my dinner, but will have to have
some money to pay for my lodging."
"Oh, don't you worry about that.
You'll get that In tips."
"I don't think I quite understand,"
I said.
"Don't get uppish right off the
reel. You're In a bad predicament,
my girl, and It's up to you to make
good at something or you're liable to
starve to death. Not that a beauty
like you need be hungry long; you'll
be a meal hound If you stay around
here long enough. You won't be able
to eat all the meals that they'll offer
to blow you to."
For a moment everything else was
forgotten in my desire to ttrike this
man. I fairly trembled at my help
lessness, but my anger gave me cour
age and I accepted his offer of work,
thinking if it proved distasteful when
I had paid for my dinner I could
quit. It was impossible for me to
speak, howover, so I raised my hands
to remove my hat.
"You are a game little sport,
aren't you?" said the man and a note
of admiration I had not heard be
fore crept Into his voice. '"I believe
I'm strong for you, even If you are
lying."
"Here, Sellers, take her back to
her station."
"Pardon me, I'll find It myself," I
answered.
The detective eyed me sullenly,
but the manager seemed to realize
that I was afraid of creating a sensa
tion again, and said:
"I'll show you the way myseslf.".
I meekly followed, but stopped and
must have looked my amazement
when he said to the hat checker:
"Here's a pal for you, Mamie. Now
quit yelling for help."
The girl turned quickly and I liked
her at a glance. Her Irish face and
broad smile gave me comfort imme
diately, and I thought, "Here's some
one who will believe my story."
"This is Annie Whitcomb. Mamie."
I gave a sigh of relief as I found
the man had misunderstood my
nnme.
For awhile I stood watching her
with admiration and wonder as she
gave each man the right hat, appar
ently glancing at-the checks. I had
an added respect for even her occu
