The great national issue before the people of the nation this year. Is, of course, the League of Nations. The national election is a great refereti duni on that question, but the elec tion or county officials has no bear ing whatever on the League of Na Hons. The citizens of Douglas coun ty should get away from party af filiation In i he election of their county officials. In each office to be filled the tuudidute should bo elec ted, who is most capable of filling tne oirice creditably and efficient ly. The democratic committee is therefore, asking the support of the voters of Douglas county for the democratic county candidates be cause, taken man for man, the dem ocratic list offers in this particular county election, a more efficient and tetter qualified list of candidates than (he opposing party. The dem ocratic committee will be satisfied if the voters of Ue county will vote in each instance for the best quali fied man. Slate Senator In advocating the election of J. li. MeClintork us state senator, the committee feels sure of its position. Mr. Met'lintofk Is the ideal type of man that makes an efficient legis lator. Nearly all legislation of today is decided in committee rooms, and the legislator who really accom plishes something for his locality is not necessarily the man wno can talk the loudest or show the great est heat in discussion, hut the nian who tolerates and respects the views of others, and who can s,it around i committee table and both give and take. In the nine years McClIntock has lived in Hosehuig. he has made a host of friends, by reason of his sterling character, and those attrib utes by which a friendly man draws friends to himself. He would win friends and respect in the state sen- it e. That b bis disposition: and he would accomplish results. He would levote his time and attention to matters that are really worth while, lie would not like to indulge in bit er denunciation and intolerance of hosA who might differ with him. He is well Informed, an easy speak- r thoroughly conversant with the needs and interests of Douglas coun- y. He has no whims, he rides no hobby. In matters of law he is well n formed, though not of the legal stic mind that sometimes proves a bane. The call for McCIlntock a candl- lacv came not olone from members of his own political party, but from nfluential men of the opposition narty as well, who felt a strong de- sir to have Douglas county repres ented in the state senate, by some ?ood level headed likeable man. Mr. MrClintocK took an active part in all war activities and fur nished two sons for overseas. It is generally conceded that Mc CIlntock will carry the city of Roso- bure by a comfortable majority, it argues well for a man when he is supported by his homo people those who know him best. He is en titled to win in the county as well. County Commissioner. In casting about for a man to rep resent them on the county board the people seek first, a man who is absolutely honest and necond. a man who has made a success of his own business, for such a man can he trusted to successfully handle th county buniness. In R. V. Long, candidate for county commissioner, keared In Douglas county, he knows and understands existing conditions and the wants of Its people. By in dustry, honesty, and progressive-, ness he has made a success of his I own business. His farm is a tnouei for progressive farmers. He knows what good roads mean to a tanner. and. if elected, will see to It that good market roads are built. He Mauds for progress, but demands full measure for every dollar of the peonies money expended. Honest. capable and successful, that is Hob Long. Shcfiff. There must be a great many good qualities In any man with as many friends as Harry I'earce. J nes friends are not limited to the dem ocratic party, with which Hurry in Identified, but many or ni most. active supporters are repubii' ans. Harrv Pearce is well qualified ror the office of Sheriff. He is fearless, has an ample store of the Initiative. and a good fund of common hors( wnse. He would devote nis attention ; to the real criminals and would up-i hold the reputation that Douglas county has won under Sheriff Quine. Hp vould enforce tne law wnnoui fear, favor or bias, and would give an effiUcnt administration of the office. Personally. Why should a county official be punished for efficiency. The one and only argument advanced against the re-election of Ed Lenox as county clerk Is that he has held the office a long time. Just why has lnox been re-elected from time to time in (he face of an overwhelming reg istered nt a j ori t y ? It Is becu u se he has proven himself to be an excep tionally well qualified and efficient county clerk. Would not this same argument of Toting a person out of office because he has hold it a long time, lead to an illogical and ridicu lous conclusion if applied to other matters, as for instance, school teacher, the supreme court judge, or indeed, the good wire?. Lenox has an enviable record for efficiency and careful keeping of the county records. Can it be honestly thought that the efficiency oi the office could be benefitted by voting I .en ox out? hy vote against a competent county official merely be cause he registers as a democrat? It is not the presumption that the of fice would be more efficiently hand led by voting In Lenox's opponent? Then, why take a chance? Attorney General. The Kugeno Guard has the follow- iiifT to say regarding the candidacy of Attorney O. P. Coshow of this city. (). P. Coshow, for many years a leading attorney of Roseburg has decided to bucouie a candidate for attorney general. He belongs to one of the pioneer families of the Wil lamette valley and Is a native Ore gotiian; he was a tttudeiit of the lni verity of Oregon for two or three years, but did not complete his course of studies at the institu- ti n. No man stands higher In the estimation of the community in which he lives than Mr. Coshow, and his reputation as a capable and hon est attorney Is tute wide among the members or the bar. Once he was chosen to Represent Douglas county in the state senate, and at the con clusion of his term, retired to civil life without seeding any further pol itical honors.
