contract to fight. If wo Join the
league, we agree to fight when call
ed in to do so.
International lawyers and diplo
mats may argue this point. Some
say that we may sign the league
covenant and mill not fight unless
wo want. They argue that nfter our
allies cull on us. we are still at lib
erty to go in or stay out.
The soldier does not look at th
league covenant In this way. He does
not bother with tho law or diplo
macy. We sign a contract, we must
keep It. We give a promise, we must
redeem It. He does not even think
about whether It Is morals or law
that binds us. He only knows that if
we give a pledge we are going to
stand by It.
Take for Instance article X, the
war article of the league. Tho soldier
reads there that the members of'
the league "underlake to respect and
preserve against external aggression"
the territory and independence of
other members. That is the lan
guage of the covenant. The soldier
unnslales that language In his mind
into United Slates. Ho then would
put the pledge, if signed by the
United States, in about this form:
"The United KtitteB undertakes to
respect anil preserve itgnitist external
aggression" Ihe territory of all menr
hers of the league. Add to this thnt

ia merely a polite name for war, and
you have article X as he sees it.
Everything elses Is to him Just cam
ouriago. We glvo our word to stand

nation In the leagu that Is suffering
from a ease of "external aggression.
Once given we have to keep It.
Tho (rouble might come in China
or 8!am, Greece, India or Kgypt. We

the British empire. We might not
like the Job. we might even sympa
thlse with the Chinese, or Hindus,
but we should have given our word
in a plain contract and we should

have seen foreign nations and know
they are foreign to us. They know
that every foreign, in war as In
peace, acts first and last for Itself.
If a forolgn nation gets into war
while acting In Its own interest, they
do not see why they should be
shinned to Europe or Asia to help It
They do not understand why Ameri
can blood should be shed to build up
any foreign nation. Therefore they
are against taking the pledge, tney
are against article X, they are
against the covenant.
To fight In wnr Is the most solemn
business on earth. Those who have
fought know this better than any
body elses and they are against fight
ing for any country except the Unit'
ed Stntes.
