An appeal by an American Indian, a preacher and reteran of a machine 'gun bat talion in the world war, for the pro tection of his own soil has been re ceived by the American Legion Weekly. The Rev. Whltefeather, a member of the Fallon, Nev., post of the Legion, la the author of the ap peal which asks that the "white man" be kept oil the reservation near Stillwater, a proposal having been made to open it for settlement. "Make a law that no white man or Mexican can take our lands or marry in this tribe," he? urges. "Put all poor Indians in good shape and I know that the government will be well paid In the long run. The "trunk murder" n-ystery in connec tion with which Eugene Leroy Is being sought by detectives all over the country and in Canada and Mexico, has ramifications which ex tend from New York to Michigan, Mississippi and Alabama. A few minutes after an employee of the American Railway Express Company here had discovered the nude and mutilated body of a young woman in a trunk atored ln the unclaimed baggage warehouse, pol ice dr New York and Detroit began following the. train of evidence which led to the victim's identifi cation df Mrs. Katherlne Lou Jack son of Sturgis, Miss., and the loca tion of A. A. Talum, whose name and a Detro't street address were found marked on the trunk which concealed the crime for n-ore than a month. At 165 Harper street, Detroit, Tatum was unknown, but someone there told detectives that a young couple known as Mr. and Mrs. E. Leroy had dlsnppearcd from that address about June 10, the date on which the trunk was ' shipped to New York. The publicity given these two names, Leroy and Tatum, brought forward Andrew . J. Branlc. a New York expressman who said he knew Leroy" under the name df Fernan dez. He told the police he had handled a trunk for Fernandez or Leroy. who.' he said, also used the name of O. K. Woods. He pro duced a letter from Leroy, enclosing check for-the trunk ln which the body was later found, asking that It be removed from tne express warehouse and stored- by Branlc un til Leroy should call for It. A Detroit policeman, Leo Trum bull, then came to the front, de claring "that he and his wire Knew the young woman who lived with I-eroy as his wife at the Harper Avenue address. When the body of the murdered woman arrived ln Dertolt. Trumbull and his wife Identified it as "Mrs. Leroy." Then from the south came posi tive word that "Mrs. Leroy" was really Mrs. Jackson, wife of Kid McCoy Jackson of Sturgis, Mlssls- SlDl. "The town was too sman ior KHtv Lou and she went away. Jackson said, when asked to tell what he knew of his wfre's wan derings. Next Tatum, the man whose name appeared on the mysterious trunk, walked Into police headquarters at Birmingham, Alabama, and explain ed his connection with the case. He told the authorities that he had known Jlrs. Jackson In Birm ingham, where he works as a llno- tvne ODerator. At her Invitation he said, he visited her ln Detroit, where she told him she had mar ried Leroy and that he was "ter ribly jealous". Shortly afterward. Tatum said, he returned to Birm ingham. He declared that the next he heard of the woman was wnen he read of the discovery of her body.
