San Francisco's Chinatown, at one time perhaps the largest of any American or European city, continues to de crease in population, according to statements from the Chinese consul ate and the Chinatown anlice squad. Before the San Francisco fire of 1906 there were over 30.000 Chinese here. It was estimated. Today China town is credited with a population ot between 6000 and 7000. Chinese populations In other sec tions of the United States also are decreasing, according to census rtg--..,,. fhcntnl.t. In 1900. th"V show; there were approxitUair!? iT- 000 In America. In 1910 tne numDer had decreased tot about 71,000. and In 1090 In ES.000. Many reasons have been assigned for the decrease nere. i ne coonumir thinks restrictions on Chinese Immi gration have been the main cause and agrees with officials of the po lice squad that the ban placed on gambling In the Chinese quarter Is another reason. Chinese love to ramble, the police say. and whua the ban was ordered many left Eastern eltlea have eaJM many San Francisco Chines where they engage In the restaurant and laun dry businesa. Chicago, It la said., has drawn heavily upon Sao Frau clsco's Oriental Quarter. Oregon Prune Market Unsettled The following dispatch from Port land will be of Interest to Ihe prune growers of the Umpqua Valley: The Oregon prune market Is still in an unsettled condition. Opening price have not yet been fixed by the association, but - are expected very. soon. There is, consequently, no. selling by packers and no con tracting with growers Is reported. One df the Independent packers an nounced an opening price ot 1 4 44 cents, bulk basis, ou 40-50s. This was criticised by the association as a cent too high and there matters have halted. The California asso ciation opened at lSVi cents on the same slxe, but It has none of these to offer. Some early contracts were made with northwestern growers on the basis ot 16 cents for 30-40s, but there has been no recent buy ing. The Oregon crop is doing fairly well, notwithstanding the dropping In some ot the valley countries. It Is thought the yield may run about 60,000,000 pounds. At the beginn ing of the season a crop df 80.000, 000 pounds was hoped for. Last year the dried prune output ot the state was 35.000,000 pounds, and two years ago 66.000.000 pounds. Independent packers of Califor nia prunes are falling In line with the association as to prices on the 1920 crop, and one by one they are meeting the lower range announced by the big factor. Some are even feeling out buyers at slight con cessions on the smaller sites. The buyers of association assortments .ire taking up their contracts and some little Interest In resales has developed. Eastern nuyers are not dispose! to accept the statements that the old crop has bee'n pretty well clean ed Hp on the coast, and there are persistent rumors, accredited to easterners who have been In Cali fornia recently that there are still considrnble quantities df the smal ler sizes held back which may be reprocessed and sent eastward as new crop goods. SALT LAKE CITY. Aug. 21. In dictments charging the Utah-Idaho Sugar company and (ts officers, many of whom are prominent Salt Lake and Ogden business men, with having made exorbitant profits In the sale of sugar, were returned today by a special United States grand jury. ' M. C. Radabaugh, the auctioneer, expects to leave for North Dakota 'omorrow, where he has been called on account of several sates that he will have charee of there. Sugar Soaring as Canning Nears For the first time In many weeks there la now Indication of a slight drop In the price of sugar In the lo cal market, though It Is not at all affected by Ihe' big drop reported in the east. Wholesale dealers here state that the report of 15-cent sugar In the east Is not based upon an ac tual decline In refiners' prices but la probably the result of a certain group of dealers who have become panicky over the market prospects and are endeavoring to unload. The local Jobbers have received no Inti mation of reductions In the west, and there Is no promise of large reduc tions to the consumers In time to help out the canning season. Some of the local dealers have made a spe cial reduction of one and a half cents on granulated sugar, and 20 cents a pound for the brown grades. As a result of the price there is only a fraction of the usual demand for sugar In Eugene and the demand for fruit cans and supplies Is affected In the same proportion. Eugene Guard.
