Captain James C. Clpson, aged 83
years, a native of Wisconsin, was
buried at Ihe Soldiers Home ceme
tery this morning. Itev. C. H. Hilton
conducting Ihe service. Captain Glp-
son bears a reniarkablo record for
war service. Entering tho naval ser
vice as an apprentice at the age of
18 years, he was threo times pro-
moled for gallant and meritorious
conduct. Serving with Karragu
ilirouuhout the Mississippi campaign,
he was one of the officers aboard the
Cardondellelte when that vessel led
ihe fleet in the run of the blockade
at Island number 10. He waa eom-
niander of the vessel at the siege or
Vicksburg. He came to Portland
about fix years ago and about two
ars ugo took up bis abode at tne
Idiers Home. Soon after his ar
rival in this city his wife, who ac
companied him, died. Ho issurvtvea
by n brother, A. E. Glpson, of Cald
well, Idaho, who came to this city
Sal unlay, having learned of his
brother's serious Illness through a
telegram sent by Commandant Tay
lor. He Is also survived by a sister
who resides In Wisconsin.

him to has his goitre removed, and
he is at Seaside at present resting for
the operation. Dr. Miller has Been
in ill health for some time. He will
not return to Koseburg until the first
of September.

Charles Stanton, veteran "pencil
nusher" of the News Review, and
wile will leave tomorrow afternoon
for Cottago Grove, from which place
they will make a trip Into the Bo
hemia mining district. They plan to
be absent from Koseburg several
weeks on their vacation trip, during
which time Mr. Stonton plans to se
cure photos and data for feature
stories.

GAS ARRIVES MCXDAY.
The gasoline situation was greatly
relieved today as the result of the ar
rival of a tank car containing 10,000
rations of gasoline sent from the
Wlllhrldge Standard Oil station. This
ear was unexpected and was sent out
because of the emergency here. Mr.
llviand ordered a distribution to lo
cal filling stations and sent out tho
major portion of the remainder to
nearby towns, where It Is to be dis
tributed to trucks nnd tractors only.
At the presort time essentials are
being given inn per cent, while 10
per cent Is given pleasure cars. Mr.
Ilviai-d states that the 10.000 gnllons
will serve the city and community
for about two days and by the timo
if is exhausted another car shipped
from Wyoming is expected to be
here. There are five cars on the way
to the local plant and with their ar
rival there will be no danger of being
forced to shut down on any of the
Important Industries. It Is expected
that a ratio of 100 per cent for es

middle of September.
