"No, no, this telegram does not In

"Oh. yea I can dear. Trouble and
grief always rail for solitude." and 1
turned away toward my room.
Alice ifollowed me. "It may seem
an Intrusion to you. Katherine, but
I cannot allow you to go to your
room. I,et me telephone John."
"No, he la the laat person I want
to aee.' I g:iid impetuously.
"What has he been doing now?'
aaked Alice quickly, aa we entered
my room.
"I don't understand how he could
do It," i said more to myaelf than
to her.
"What has he done Katherine?"
"lie has polil my childhood home

"Hut he couldn't do that." affirmed
AU'jp. "You would have to sign the

"I am going to telephone to Tom

said Alice decisively.
".No, .don t do that. There may he
some mistake. Let me think. Let me
ihink. surely John would not sell the

hen til! at once it came to me. A
little whtlo before during John's

that the meanest man in all the world

"No. don't call him. I know he has
done this. Ha wanted me to give
him the last little nest egg I had
left from the oil wells and I would
not do it. He thinks he has a right
to dispose of my property as he
wishes. I think, too. that he has the

"Oh, dear," exclaimed Alice, "I

Myrtle Point Road
To Get Gravel
COQUILLE. Ore.. July 28 Coun
ty Judge Wade yesterday received a
letter from the state highway com
mission In answer to recent petitions
by the county court with reference
to the Coqullle Myrtle Point road,
and also from Myrtle Poiut to the
Douglas county line.
The decision of the commission Is
not altogether clear as to Just what
is Intended, although it seems that
it has granted the petition and re
quest of the court, as far 'as the let
ter can be made out. The letter is
as follows:
"I wish to acknowledge receipt of
your letter of July 20th and to ad
vise you that your letter of July 3rd
addressed to the state highway com
mission reached me in Portland and
the matter waa referred to the mem
bers of the commission.
"It was brought up Ifor considera
tion at the meeting held in Portland
on July 20th, and the secretary was
instructed to advtse you as follows:
"That the commission considers
the section of the Coos-Douglas high
way botween Coquille and Myrtle
Point to be of sufficient importance
to warrant the paving of it when the
funds are available, and to advise
you that it was the polity of the
commission to continue the grading
and gravel or macadam surfacing of
the entire CooB-Douglas fproject
when completed, and that the engi
neer has been Instructed to adver
tise for gravelMng or macadamizing
that part of the highway between
Coqullle and Myrtle Point which Is
now graded to standard width and
now ready for surfacing and such
parts as may be made ready this
year.
"The commission at a previous
meeting instructed the engineer to
advertise for gravel surfacing the
section now under contract for grad
ing between Remote and Camas val
ley, as soon as the grading contract
sufficiently advanced to permit
the beginning of the surfacing con
tract."
