A check amounting to $87. was passed Wednesday on the Duds Vor Men store by A. W. Miller, who for ged the name of H. J. Hughes to the check. Miller was seen In Rose- burg for several days prior to the passing of the check. He fs a younr man about 18 years of age. Is well dressed. Wednesday he appeared In i store and purchased a shirt and oral other articles amounting to $10. In payment he tendered the check, made out to himself and sign ed with toe forged name, the check was cashed and the correct change I given the young man who has not been seen since. The matter was re- v"nou tu mo uiiirero, who are malt ing a search tor the forger. SAM GOLDSMITH DIES. The funeral of Samuel Goldsmith familiarly known as "Sam" to his many friends In Roseburg, was held Wednesday In Portland. Mr. Gold smith died at his home Friday night after a brief Illness. For over 20 years he has been a travelling sales man, l or some time connected with the Mason-Ehrman compny of Port land, and at the time of his death was with a flouring mill company. No travelling man was held In high er esteem than Mr. Goldsmith who by his genial dlspositoa, made very many friends. He Is well and favor ably known in this city, having made this territory for many years. He was botn In Eugene, April 7, 1864 and he has resided In that city from childhood.
