All Tnued to lioutfla County Orgtuiixutloiw. One of the most pot tut factors In developing a spirit of Co-operation among the farmers of Douglas coun ty has been the Grange, says tht rortland Telegram. - This oldest of farm organisations was instituted In the county about eight years ago, and there are now many thriving granges In the beau tiful valley of the Umpqua. several of the local societies owuing their own halls and adding wonderfully tn the commercial and social life of these fortunate localities. Several local granges purchase feed and other farm necessities in car lots, thereby reducing the over head cout of conducting the farms of the members; but probably the chief result obtained by these local organ! zalioua ts the fact that the farmers of these communities meet together with their families at stated inter vala, thereby becoming better ac quainted with each other. This meet ing at regular intervals gives the men an opportunity to talk over their farm problems and the economic questions of the day; gives the moth ers and wives an opportunity to dls cup a the questions they are especially interested in. and also affords the young people that opportunity for so cial life that young people must hav in order to make them contented with country life. Kduoatlmi Amplified. Nearly all the granges of the coun ty hold lecture programs during the winter months, at which times speak era from the university,, agricultural college and other institutions are in vited to speak to fhe community. The young people of these local valleys develop considerable hisl ionic ability in placing upon the stage plays and I dialogues. In one local grange an I orchestra of sixteen pieces furnishes good music for dances that are gen ' erally limited to the members of the , grange. In nearly every grange hall in the county a Sunday school is con i ducted and church services are held ' as often as it is possible to persuade i a minister to conduct them, j The Douglas County Pomona I grange has always been an Important factor tn the development of the county. Meeting several times a year, generally with one of the local granges, topics of peculiar Interest to fanners are discussed and remedies sought. Turing the session of the legislature the Pomona grange sends representatives to Salem in the inter est of some one or more measures that the farmers are particularly In terested In. Knrm Crop Bettered. The commercial development of the broccoli industry is a direct out growth of the Pomona grange, thi organization having financed the campaign of education and interest that made the commercial growing of this crop a success. The 1 ader of the Pomona grange, Mrs. C. H. Pulley, Is also an officer In the Oregon State Grange, and she. together with her husband. Dr. C. II. Bailey, who is a state deputy fur the order, has always "taken a great interest In the development of the order In the county. The Douglas County Pomona grange has always stood for better roads, hotter rural schools, better economic conditions for the farmer: has been largely Instrumental in ob taining the services of a county agri cultural agent, has financed and con ducted several farmers' Institutes, has helped in developing the com munity fair idea and whenever pro gressive ideas have been advanced has always been ready to throw its influence and weight In that direc tion. o Portland Aviator Crashes His Plane ALONE in the tire field -the Firestone 3!2 takes its place beside the half dozen products of universal use which manufacturing genius has made standard.
