With seven movie cameras trained
on him, Charles J. Wilson of Chicago
made the famous "Leap for L,lte In
un Elgin Six over a thirty foot creek
near Elgin yesterday afternoon. The
bridge over the creek, which Is lo
cated on the road out of Elgin to
ward Pingree Grove, had been ro
moved to add a thrill to the feat.
The Jump, which was made In an
ordinary Elgin stock car. was put on
bv the Atlas Educational Film company.
Altho the Jump had been Kept as
unlet as possible to avoid a large
crowd, scores of people thronged the
banks of the creek, and as many
more lined the sides of the road.
Takes Off I'rom Platform.
After the bridge had been removed,
leaving only the steel girdles, and
the roads had been scraped to assure;
a good start, the movie men got their
cameras in line and the crowd was
pushed Into a field at the side of
ranee.
In the center of the mad a sloping
nlatferm was placed, tho "take-off"
for the lean. Beginning nt a distance
of about half a mile tip tho road.
Wilson sped the crlmRon car towards
the onen stream, and bit the scraped
strntght-awnv going 60 miles an
hour, amid the breathless Bllence of
the watching throng.
Up tbp take-off tho Elgin skimmed
like a bird, and there was an audible
rnn from the crowd as the big car
shot thru the air. For a moment the
loud roar of the motor and the
ettckfng of the eanfcras was the only
Intrusion on the sHonee. Then, with
a resounding crash that could be
heard for many feet, the big car hit
the rend. Wilson's khaki shirt, clear
ly outlined aealnRt the background,
showed how he had thrown himself
completely out. of the seat' and was
balancing on the steering wheel to
avoid being killed with the shock.
Thin Fence Into Field.
Due to shifting conditions of the
dusty road, the front wheel hit a rut
while the car was still bouncing and
before the driver could get control,
tore thru a fence into a field. Wind
ed by the dust and thinking that the
car had turned turtle, tho throng of
watchers dashed as one man towards
'ho spot. They arrived In time to
see Wilson climbing out with a
smile on his face. A gnat sigh of
relief went up from the spectators
the man was unhurt and the car was
in perfect condition.
Actual measurements showed the
car had landed at a distance of sixty
feet from where It left the
