Hurt In Wreck
Following an Investigation nf Ihi
sad disaster at Hertha Sunday when
two of the Southern Pacific electric
trains collided with a loss of nine

Wesley Meredith, formerly of this
city, waa slightly Injured in the
wreck, sustaining a bruised shoul
der aitd a number of severe lacera
lions about the head and face. II(
was unconscious for several minuter
but upon recovering assisted in re
moving the dead and the injured.
When iiie crash came he was seatet1
with 0. R. Arundell, who lost hi,
wife and baby In the smashup. Wes
ley has been working at lllllsltoro
and was on his way to Portland at
the time of the accident.

of the Southern Pacific in Kugcne

proceeding at Its usual speed thru

of trucks on a gondola car broke in
two and caused four cars In the
middle of the train to pile up. On
of the cars, loaded with cement, as
literally reduced to kindling wood
the gondola, loaded wlih lime rock
from tiold Hill to Ihe Oswego cement
works, was torn off Its trucks ami
turned upside down In the ditch

angles with the track and a second
boxcar was derailed and pretty badly
smashed up. The track was torn
up for a distance of 40 or ."0 feet
and the car containing the load ol
cement was thtHwn across the street
railway track, which parallels the
t-' P. track. Conductor liankln said
that when the accident occurred the
train came to a very sudden stop
and while he was on the extreme
rear end of the long string nf cars,
he knew what had happened.

one of the cars that .was wrecked
only a second before the crash came.
He had Just passed from that car to
the next one ahead when the acct,
dent occurred. He said that had he
teen walking a little slower he
would have been caught. Trainmen
say that a hoho had been riding In
