Electric Farm Machinery Saves The development of electric labor saving machinery for the farm has brought to light some very interest ing figures. Take fur .Instance the matter of pumping and . carrying water. her all household purposes such as drinking, cooking, washing, scrub ling and cleansing, the average farm family will uso about 7 gallons per person each day or 42 gallons for a family of six. Now 42 gallons of water weigh 336 pounds and if those 42 gallons were pumped and carried cn only 300 days out ot the year, it v. Ill mean that some one will have to pump and carry 100,800 pounds, or over 50 tons of water every year. Furthermore, If a 3-gallon bucket Is used it will mean 14 trips to the well every day, and If the well Is 15 feet from the house, this will mean 30x14 or 420 feet daily. In the 3.00 days this will amount to 126.000 feet or rearly 24 miles. So the farmer's wife who pumns and carries water for the house walks 12 miles to the pump every year, pumps 60 tons of water and walks 12 miles back to the house carrying the f 0 tons of water. Mefore returning to Portland, af ter completing his survey ot the Til ler cut off road, Kuglneer Heusley in timated that his report will to fav orable for the early resumption of construction on the proposed hifch- y. 11 is laid tnat the estimate-of 465,000 first made was very liberal and, in fact. It is believed that at 'nat time the road could be built for much less than that amount. With Increased costs, however, It becomes a question whether or not llie work can be done for that sum and if not the government probably will do rotning until the construction can be done at Its original estimate. Although no definite announce ment was made, it was Intimated that the engineers ascerlained that the cut can be made for the sum urlgi nally estimated and will so revert. It this Is the fact, work will probably be begun about the first of June and will be rushed to completion. The upper end of the road will be opo-ed In order to provide a route so t..at cars may start through within a short time. The residents of Douglas county are very anxious to see this road cpened up In order that the Crater lake country may become more easily accessible, as well as that a detour may be provided when the canyon road Is closed for paving. In the event the highway is blocked for iny considerable length of time, cit ies and towns alontr the route will lose heavily -from the loss of the tourist travel, but If a detour can bo provided there will be no loss. The Crater lake route by way of Tiller will also bring the Klamath Falls and Bend country many miles nearer Roseburg, Insofar as length of travel is concerned, and the 'change ot route will doubtless mean a great many dollars to this com munity because of tnat fact. The forest sen ice has turned thl project over to the bureau of public roads but is showing a great inter est in the matter as it Is desired to ee the road brought to an early completion. In the event the esti mate of a few years ago Is not ex ceeded by the one recently made, there is no doubt but that the work will be resumed In the very near fu lure. COLI.ATKKAL.
