When a man gets a package of government seeds, ne Is very apt to be subtly impressed with the idea that his congressman la on the Job, and personally Interested in his wel fare. As a matter of fact, the seed distribution is mostly In the hands of clerks and secretaries. If the con gressmen spend much time on It, It is time taken from duties for which their attention is much needed. The seeds have been popular In a way, becuuses people folt they were get ting something for nothing. That always arouses warm enthusiasm. They did not stop to think that they had to pay for It 111 their taxes. The free seed distribution has been kept up for Its supposed value as political propaganda. The people do not care to pay for that. It would do con gress good to cut out this little ltom of pork. It might give them courage to tackle bigger ones. The United States senate is ready to do away with It. The delegation of represen tatives from Oregon should assist. The Kansas state highway engi neer says but little brick and cement road can be laid In his state this year, owing to high cost of such ma terials. Other states find the Bame difficulty. But let not pro ducers of materlul think any old price will be paid. Motor truck trans portation makes It possible to trans port rock, gravel, etc., much further than formerly. Recent road build ing has tended toward use of the most permanent substances. But substitutes can bo used If producers have too lofty Ideas on prices. Wildcat rumors are being spread throughout the east In reference lo desiruulo Oregon limd offered sol diers by the government. Glowing accounts are being published about the "something for nothing" buga boothat each and every soldier cun get a homestead or timber claim for the asking and the way la paved for great fortunes. The real truth of the matter Is there is nothing left in the way of desirable land to accom modate any great number of soldier boys, and this stroke of "generosity" set by the government In behalf of those who slaked their lives and won against Prussian domination Is mighty poor compensation for the services performed. Spending a lot of money does not helD to get elected to office nowa days, but so far none, of the political workers has refusesd to take all that anybody wanted to offer him. The people who have set out to own their own homes., and are pay ing fixed rates of interest on a mort gage, are not complaining about any rent profiteering. The high cost of living seems to take on renewed energy about as fast, probably faster, than the drives being inaugurated to eliminate the demon. A large number of men as usual will feel that they can raise a garden this year, by instructing their wives where and how to plant and culti vate The ppople who are profiteering under present conditions of soclul unrest, might well be expected also to he found smoking In a powder mill. Tlchenor, deputy United States marHh.nl, was In the city to day attending to business matters and this afternoon held an Inspection of the local post of the Spanish war veterans. Mr. Tlchenor Is well known In this city and has visited here upon numorous occasions. Only recently ho Invaded the city of Reedsport end arrested a number of the residents of that place on charges of moonshlning. Strike of the Switchmen! To the Public: Strikers who have not returned to work are being replaced by new men; this work will be swiftly and vigorously followed un til normal service is restored. The strike was without notice to the railroad. It is not author ized by any Railroad Brotherhood. It violates working agree ments, violates the rules of the Brotherhood to which the men belong, and violates the law of the United States Section 301 . Transportation Act of 1 920. It is in defiance of the orders of the Railroad Brotherhoods ex ecutives, and has neither the sympathy nor support of the over whelming majority of railroad employees. New men will be given seniority rights in order of employment, wages are sixty-four cents an hour for eight hours work a day and ninety-six cents an hour for overtime. Prof. McKnlght, of the Roseburg high school, spoke on the co-operation of the grade and high schools and urged the parents and pupils to feel the public school work was not completed until thru the twelve grades. During the busi ness meeting Mr. Butner Introduced the following resolution, which was endorsed by the association and adopted: Roseburg, Ore., April 9, 1920. Conference Held At Baptist Church The Baptist church was filled to its capacity at the uulon meeting last night. The keynote of the address last night was co-operation and the Idea seems to be gathering force all along the line. Mrs. D. C. Kelluma, of Eugene, made the principal ad dress of the evening and showed how union effort had been made effective In women's missionary work. She stated that women of all demonia tf'ms study the same books and have a same topics for their study. 'There is no sex In religion," she said. Mr. Kellum Is a vigorous. fnroeful speaker ond her address was replete with humor and pathos. The pictures were thrown upon a large screen and were explained by r.ev. R. A. Garnall. Many of the grams of statistics showing the inhere of religious activity In India, I nlna, Japan, South Amorloa and our own country. The speaker showed how the Interchurch move ment was expected to prevent over lapping of religious activities as well as extending the work of the churches ta districts which are now wholly without religious instruction.
