MANY CITUS t1MI'HTINO Thousands or cities and lowns are competing to secure new manufac turing enterprises. Much money put Into new Industries n the result Of uch efforts, has been lost. Such failures usuully resulted from In sufficient Investigation. A commit tee of business men would make a hurried trip lo look up I lie proposed enterprise. They would not no lo the bottom of the thing. After Hie concern got started, It would oflim be found that It was not us repre sented, or the hopes OI (lie promot ers would prove Illusory. Never theless many towns succeed In devel oping their own 'Iniluslrlnl growtn. Successful corporal Ions are con 'stantly enlarging their business by starting now branches In other towns' where limy cun find .workers. Such concerns do not commonly go beg ging for stock subscriptions. They very frenuenllv Insist that they lie given a chance to rent some suitable building, at least until the new en terprise gels on Its feet. There is not usuully much risk In assisting a -proposition of this kind. A progres sive town should bo willing, in pro portion to Us size and wealth, to build and rent a factory for a hope ful proposition. The country's, man- , ufocturlng facilities are taxed. A good factory building adapted to more than one purpose Is not apt To tnnd Idlo. In almost any town hav ing good manufactur.ng enterprises there are some which coulu enlarge If .they had more capital. Ilusiness men should watch the progress of such concerns. They should not be allowed to go elsewhere, or to lose a chance for development, because of a lack of pariners willing to take an Interest In their enterprise. There Is no reason for wrtilng these ponderous 500 fiusre books on the psychology of advertising. Af ter you read one of them you feel you know less about the subject than when you started In The art of writing good advertising Is rather simple, but certain definite princi ples should be followed. To make advertising the most -interesting, it should he treated as a news item .The public is always most Impressed by anything that Is new and that has happened Just i-erontly. If you print two news reports, one of some event that hapepned yesterday, and one of au event of egual Importance that happened months ago, the re port ik yesterday's event will at-trer-t far more attention. Advertising is Just as much news as any part or the N'ews-itevlew. It Is read with Just as keen interest In all newspa pers as any other news. So the first principle of successful advertising. Is to make 11 sound newsy. This is not difficult to do, as will lie seen laler. In July, 1914. the paper currency, in circulation In this country was' three per cent in excess of the gold reserve. In December, lit 19, the ra tio had Increased until the paper ex ceeded the gold by V2 per cent. In the same period tif time the cost of ( living, that Is. the cost of all Items entering Into the family budget, in creased approriniately 115 per cent. It Is more than a coincidence tiiat ' the degree of inflation of currency and prices bear so close a relation lo each other. Increase of price Is the Inevitable corollary of currency inflation, and Just so long as paper money is permitted to trlood the couniry Just so long will the present high price wave continue. The man who says he Is perfectly Independent lies unless he Is the only Inhabitant of a deserted Island. If you have lost some of your "pep' It usually means that you have lost some of your mind. NKVKX TIIIN'tiH iOI AXMJT l. The startling and striking theme announced by the evangelist at the t'lHiHtian church tonight is ''Seven Things (iod Cannot Do." This Is a companion sermon to the one given last night on "Seven Things a .Man f'annot lo." The seven thiu-ts a man cannot do are as follows: cannot suve himself, cannot live to himself. cannot -bury his iiiriuence tn the gravej cannot escape death and Judgment, cannot find peace -apart from (iod, and cannot make peace with (iod without Christ, cannot de ceive (iod, and cannot escape Jesus. II was a stormy, night and there wero many counter attractions, bu the audience filled the auditorium The solo was one of the most beau tiful yet given. The evangelists have been preeminently srl- -essful, and those who hear them are mostly very much pleased. He does not hesi tale in plain language to point out sin. and show its dangers.
