John's in .aCul.li ambition Is to Kaln power. He loves money only that he may make a showing with it. He delights In paying big bills and in demon strating to the world his ability as a money winner. In his married life he desires his wife td be a doll, to be strictly his possession, to be paraded before his friends. Altho a free spender he refuses to give his mother or his wife spending mo-, ney of their own but will pay any bills which they may contract. This leads to deception on the part of the mother but the w-lfe refusing to fol low the course set by the mother demands an allowance 'for herself. She is refused and a misunderstand ing arises. John's actions with Bess Morelnnd a former sweetheart at last leads to an accident in which Kate is seriously Injured considera ble publicity resulting. John how ever, continues his affair with Bess until a fight results with Karl She pard bis best friend who secretly Ib In love with Kate. She decides to leave John and after selling some of her Jewelry to her sister in-law Alice. Bhe goes to Atlantic City where she is saved from committing suicide by Karl Shepard who arrives at the opportune moment. Shortly afterwards she is visited by her mo ther and a former suitor. Charles who has been a foster son to the mother since the denth of Kate's father. While In Atlantic Cltv, Kate's mother dies siidednly, Kate finds she has been left a large enough income to make her independent and appoints Charles as her agent in snite of the objection of her hus band. All of tho purchasers are actively engaged In the lumbering business at the pre sent time, and purchased the timber with the view of converting it into lumber for commercial purposes at once.
