Dated at Roseburg, Oregon, this 31st day of March. 1920. a10 GEOROB NEfNER. JR.. Sec. ANTWERP. .March 30 Quite apart from the sporting viewpoint, and the possibilities of national ath letic triumphs, Ilelgium expects to .urn tho m:;o Olympiad to commer cial account in the rei'onstruciinn of a war-ravaged country. Such Is tho frank admlHslon of fount ile laHlot Latour, president of the Antwerp Olympic committee. hlmsclr the keenest of sportsmen, who howeor is under no delusions as to amount of mterost displayed in sport by his countrymen, generally. Interviewed by the fuiteil l'rcss Count de Itaillet-I.atour declared. "Tho Olympic games are going to play a big part in the reconstruction of Belgium. Inasmuch as participants end spectators will include men from pll parts of the world, who will use the opportunity thus offered to open up new business prospects. "The war has shown the value of Rport as an aid to physical develop ment, and tho more widely sport Is recognized the more popular it will become. This year Belgium Is going to help to popularize sport, and in cidentally she will thus help In the reconstmctlon of her own industry. In point of fact the Antwerp Olympic sanies promise to make good Ihru out France as well. "For example, a manifesto has been issued bv the French National Sports federation urging all young men in all branches of sport to go into hard training right away, so as to uphold at Antwerp the honors al ready gained hy France at Athens rind Stockholm. The Swiss govern ment la giving a subvention of l.". 000 francs In aid of tho Swiss share of the work at Antwerp, and this will be supplemented by a national subscription organized by the Swis Sports federation. Fourteen liu Swiss spoiling organizations are al readv honked for Antwerp." Regarding Belgium's cmitrihutior. to the games, fount de Baillei-Latour declared, regretfully. "Belgium it self, in so far as the man in tli street Is concerned, cares little for sport. He does not see the neces sity for It. The average Belgian cannot differentiate for example, between boxing and fighting; be tween ruchy and succor: between tennis .nHJawn-tonnls Ye the thusiasm of those young folk who do get Interested in sport is simply excessive." That a large Influx of visitors is expected Is proved by the energetic ,vay in which the executive commit tee is making plans for the accom modation of throngs of sightseers. V. ith Antwerp as a terminal on some of the biggest Itrans-ocl n steum ship routes, and in view of the di rect service between Antwerp and New York, Baltimore and Philadel phia, the committee consider Ameri can participation a most important factor. Several members of the 1 executive committee know the prin ciiml cities of the fnlted States quite well and these have stimu lated Belgian Interest In America. Vigorous propaganda work la be ing carried on here to stimulate the somewhat dormant national Interest in matters sportive, but everybody realizes the advantages ai-cruitu from from an international sporting pilgrimage to Belgium, and every In ducement is being offered to attract ordinary war-zone visitors to th Olympic games. While the location of this year's games is but a geo graphical coincidence it happen erv fortunately for a country which 1 badly tieeds every means of compen- ' sntlon for live years' impoverishment : tl rough war.
