for submission of the Cterman obser
vations on the peace treaty expires
at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon.
After the "big four" completes the
jerusal of these last communicaiions
the date will be fixed upon which
the Germans must definitely refuse
or accept the terms. This will de
pend upon the nature of the observa
tions. There is no indication that
the treaty will be changed in any
way.
The progress of assembling the
Austrian treaty has been such thai,
it is now believed it will be ready for
signal uro at pracl ically the same
time as will (he German document.
The Austrian s will probably not be
given more than a week for a discus
sion of the terms.

Strawberry Carnival, and little Miss

nearest competitor being Miss Mabel

credit. Miss McLaughlin is Ihe
charming and accomplished daugh
ter of It. L. McLaughlin, a well
known rancher of South Deer Creel;,
and is very popular among t ho
younger set of the city. She has at
tended high school in Koseburg for

will take place at 10 o'clock
Friday morning. This will be
the only parude on the morn
ing of the first day of the car
nival. In the afternoon the
auioitiobilo parade wilt form
at 1:30 p. in. at 2:30, Im
mediately following the crown
ing of the queen ceremonies,
the queen's parade will start
from the corner of Jackson
and Cass streets. Miss Mc
Laughlin, Queen of May, and
her aides will also take part in
the automobile parade. Band
conceris and many other feat
ures will be sundwlfhed In be
tween ,he parades, crowding
the day full of pleasures.

val. They have secured the old Com
mercial Club rooms, where the eu

held two days, and cots and chairs
will be provided for the children and
ladles. They have also aecured the
urte of Ihe nuttiide lavatories of th
armory hufldliiK and Ihe largo room
immediately to (he right of the en
trance. The lavatories are, all on
thin floor and the drinking fountains
will all he cleaned and pure North

Ap and running all the time. They
are going lo erect benches on the
i-Duri house lawn, and "our fleorge"
has a sun red us lhat he will make
these of a great deal of lumber that
Ih now stored around the courthouse

committee request the merchants to
place as mnny benches as possible or
construct small benches In front of
iheir stores In order that Ihe weary
traveler may rest for a time.

At a largely attended meeting of
Ihe executive committee and those
on all other committees of the carni
val, the mem hern were so pleased
wlih the way ihe schools have car
ried ihe contest they decided to offer
additional prizes. This was to be
'u to be given In prizes for the
ichnol In Ihe parade having the best
display1. This Is a new feature, as
i hey have never appropriated more
than the original $101). The prizes
will be divided as follows: First
prize. $2ii; second. $15; third. $10;
fourth, $r. This amount can be
used by the school as Ihey see fit.
Tim Judges will be secured on the
morning of the parade and will be
selected from three traveling men
flopping in this city, who will be ab
solutely unknown to anyone here,
t bus making them competent to
judge without prejudice.

feci, thus assuring ample space for
ihe training of the little folks and
the rrowniiig of the iueens. This
Maud will be enclosed In a railing
and will be decorated. Mrs. Ilen
