The bursting of u rifle la the hands
of Charles Holmes, used lti, serious
ly injured Joe Campbell, uged 61,
and a widely known Coffee creek
miner, who was brought here last
night and admitted to Mercy hospi
tal suffering from a severe wound in
the head.
Kd Lough, who rushed the injured
man to this city by automobile, stat
ed today that young Holmes, an or
phan lad who was making his home
with Mr. Campbell, found an old 30-
40 rillo about the house and loading
vera! cartridges with black powder .
the lad retired to the front yard to
"try out tho weapon. Placing the
barrel along the edge of a cider
press, the boy pulled the trigger, and
with a loud detonation the gun ex
ploded. A piece of the breach about
hree inches in length and quite
hick, flying like a shot, paused thru
i window pane, striking Mr. Camp- '
bell, who was in a stooping position
in the act of washing dishes. He was
ill under the right eye. Ranging
low-award the steel slug passed thru
he nostril and lodged iu the roof of
(he mouth. Inflicting a most painful
md ghastly wound. Neighbors hear
ing the shot rushed to the scene and
a. re horrified to find Mr. Campbell
lying on the floor In a pool of his
wn blood, a gruesome hole in his
head. A stretcher was immediately

The unfortunate accident occurred
