rot is a fungus disease, spread by
means of two kinds of spores or
fruiting bodies. Tbo first kind of
spores are summer spores, and these
spread tile trouble during (tie sum
mer, from branch to branch in the
I rees, either by being washed from
one prune to the other by the ruin
or by being, .blown about in drf
weather, and subsequently germinat
ing when the raliiB come on. The
M'cnml class of spores are called the
holdover spores. These holdover
spores are borne on little toadstools
which come up through the ground,

However, the proper pray mav he
applied at the proper time and till
not have successful control unless
the work has been done in a very
thorough way. This is whet,, niom
fruit growers fall down than in any
other phase of the spraing ame
They think they are thorough, hut
they really do not cover the f i nil
as they should. In spiavlng prunes
successfully it Is absolutely neces
sary that there be an elbow near the
nozzle ho that the nozzle may be
turned at different angles while in
the tree mid that the spray Jimy be
directed from the Inside of the tree
so as to get underneath the flat
prune leaves. In this way the fruit
that often hangs in heavy clusters
can he protected.
Now, as to results obtained in the
Skinner and Bradford orchards. It
was found by an u'tual count of the
brown rotted prunes on trees that
had been sprayed compared with
others In the check plots that had
not been sprayed, that in the Skin
ner orchard there were over six
times as many brown rotted prunes
on the check 'plot trees as there were
ui t he sprayed trees; und in the
Mradourn orchard the ratio was
.lomcthinK li ke one to thirty or
thirty five. This means that in the
Mrailhurn orchard the prunes were
almost absolutely free from brown
rot in the section which had been
thoroughly sprayed,

Next year these spraying demon
strations may he repeated in some of
i he prune orchards in the vicinity
of Koscburg. While In case of a
tight Infection of brown rot, the cost
of spraying may not seem to be war
ranted, if the infection is heavy, this
spraying may mean tho difference
between a good crop with good prof
its and no crop at all.
