Oakland.
White arrived In Oakland sevoral
weeks ago and roaelly secured em
ployment on the ranch of II. 15. Kru
ger. He worked there until Sunday
when ho took leave during the tem
porary absence of Mr. and Mrs. Kru
ger. With him he took a number
of blank bank checks and a rifle be
longing to Mr. Knitter. Leaving the
Kruger ranch, While went to Oak
land, where he purchased a quantity
of liquor from James Crouch. In
return he gave a worthless check
which was readily honored. The
check hnd a lace value of uhout $20,
and While received ubout $20 In
cash.
White then went to Sutherlln,
where lie purchased a barrel of bot
tled beer, with instructions to have
the same shipped to Oakland. Vor
this purchase he gavo a check In the
sum of $4 5, receiving something
over $:I0 In change.
While then departed, and has since
succeeding In escaping capture.
The checks were drttwii on the
hank or H. 11. Young & Company, of
Oakland, and wore purported to have
been signed by Mrs. Kruger. When
the checks reached the depository
they were declured forgeries and the
officers were notified.
It Is believed that Whlto 1b now
enroute to California, or some other
southern state.
When White departed from Suth
erlln ho left a suitcase, partially
filled with old clothes, In the saloon
of the Sutherlln Wine Company. This
sultcaHO was turned over to Sheriff
Qulno by Mr. Pearson thlB morning.
