Kidd & Son LOCAL raws i Eugene Guard: Chester Humphrey, the young man who was kicked In the face by a horse at his home near Irving Monday afternoon, died at the Eugene hospital Tuesday evenlpg. The blow from the horse's hoot was a terrible one and besides breaking the young man's upper Jaw, caused concussion of the brain. He was 23 years old snd leaves a mother, four brothers and four sisters. In the Salem Journal of Thursday . appears a letter from Mrs. J. T. Mil-1 ler, of Hayhurst, near Yoncalla, In behalf of the Humphrys brothers, j sentenced to be banged on March SI. I The letter refers mainly to the move ments of the Humphrys while resi dents of the Hayhurst vicinity and says they are apparently wrongfully accused of unlawful acts while living there. Doubtless Mrs. Miller and many others are unaware that since being sentenced the last time for the murder of Mrs. Eliza Griffith, an elderly lady living alone In Benton County, the Humphrys have confessed and told the details of that horribly fiendish crime. According to their story, after entering the borne of their defenseless victim each In turn held her while the other unspeakably assaulted her, the second choking her to death. They then ransacked the house for whatever money they could find and before leaving each again beastlally assaulted the body of their lifeless victim. The case Is too re volting for discussion, and punish ment in any degree adequate for such fiendish acts is difficult to Imagine. With such an example before them It Is no wonder the voters of Oregon, by an overwhelming majority, de cided to retain capital punishment on the statute books for life Imprison ment would have no terrors tor such fiends as the Humphrys. Happinoss and prosperity are more likely to bo found upon the farm, but you must have a good road to find the farm. If it lo sensible to propose the iseuance of government bonds to improve water traneportation, then it is equally sensible to do so for the improvement ef wagon roads. Wilson, of Raymond, Wash., became the owner of forty acres of choice land about two miles west of town. The laud is a part of Charles F. "The blghwny department of the state of New York bait olHclally adopted a scheme suggested by Frank L Lyon, secretary of the New. York State Auto mobile association, for the designation uf the mnlu highway which could be folluwcd by the California highway commission with good results,'' says E. Stewart, an automobile agent. , The scheme is to designate the five mnlu highways by color signs. This does not mean the erection of sign lusts, but the painting of fences and bridge approaches along the various roads; also decorating telephone and telegraph poles with bands In the col ors which detdgnate tbe route that they ire on. This Is being done by tbe local utitiimohlle clubs situated on these mutes. As already adopted. California has four m:i in routes the coast route from 3:iu Kniueisi'e south, tbe count route from Sail t-'ruueisco north, the valley route from San Francisco south mid the northern Inland route from San l-'ninciseo.
