Ninety employes of Milliard & MeUInnls, the local contractors who are in financial difficulties, called at the Mayor's otrice this morning, requesting that some steps be taken hy the city to give thorn the money which the con tractors owe them. The spokesman of the employes said that many of them were without money and had families In need, and unless they could secure the money they would be forced to go hungry. The com pany owes the men from $5 to $100 each. George McCord, secretary of the Mayor, arranged a conference be tween the Mnvnr. the contractors, a representative of the bonding com-i pany which furnished the bonds for the company covering the contracts with the city, the City Attorney and a committee of the employes for this afternoon, when nil effort will be made to arrange some plan whereby the im'ti will bo paid what is owed them before Christmas. The con tractors have a large amount of un finished work, Including several sewer and street-paving jobs, and If it is determined that they are un able to continue the work, the bond ing company will be asked to com plete tho jobs and pay the workmen. ORIKION NEWS. President Kerr of the Oregon Ag ricultural College announces that be ginning in September, 11)14,, the equivalent of three years' high school work will be required for admission to the college. This was decided hy the board of regents. Of this year's freshman class 2r4 are high school graduates, 4 5 have had three years' school work, and 102 came with but two years' credits. The board of regents holds that these figures are sufficient Justification, for raising the standard. With scarcely half nn hour's de liberation, the jury in the case against E. E. Wedemeyer, charged with being a member of the Portland vice clique, returned a verdict of guilty Friday. He will be sentenced Monday. Frank Seymour, alias Parker, charged with complicity, together with .dike Spanos, In murdering Oeon a Dedaskalous, in Medford some months ago, was on Friday found guilty of murder in the first degree. Spanos had previously been convicted. Word has been received here of the death of Dr. n. F. Hummel, for merly of Roseburg. He started two weeks ago from his home In San Francisco. In company with his wife, for Syracuse, X. Y., but died on the train and wns taken off nt Ogden, Utah, whore the remains were cre mated. Dr. Hummel invested heavily In Bohemia mining property a num ber of years ago and lost heavily. He was at one time worth a million or more, but lost most of hlB money through unfortunate investments. Of late years he had traveled up and lown the Coast as one of a party of medical specialists. Maggie Adams, mother of tho Til lamook tribe of Indians, died at her home at East Garibaldi Thursday. :;he was supposed to bo 109 years of age. Eleven children survive her. How to Word Off a Cold.
