The portion of the roadway to be improved shall be excavated or filled to tho necesuary depth below the established grade of the finished roadway to, provide for the thicknesfi of the foundation and Warranite sur face and thoroughly rolled with heavy steam roller until the surface of the subgrade Is solid, and approxl mately parallel to the proposed sur face of tho finished roadway. Any soft, springy places not af fording a firm foundation shall be dug out and refilled with suitable mute rial as the engineer, supervisor or commissioner may direct, and re- rolled to the proper grade, such ex tru excavation and refilling to be paid for at actual reasonable cost oi labor ana material, plus lo per cum. All excavated material shall be deposed of by the contractor. After the sub-grade ha a been com pleted and passed the Inspection the engineer, supervisor or commls sloner, the foundation of broken stone consisting of stone that will pans through a ring three Inches diameter and be retained on a ring t xh Inches in diameter, shall be de posited in a uniform layer having a depth of stx Inches and rolled peatedly with a ten ton standard steam macadam roller until com patted to the satisfaction of the en glneer, supervisor or commissioner. Pieces of atone larger than above specified may be used, provided they are separated atad laid in a layer at the bottom of the foundation and the sarface dressed with stone of the sizes above specified. The depth of loose stone In this course must be measured by blocks the required thickness of said loose stone. These blocks must be placed at freguent intervals amid the loose stone when being spread. Stone HVN'eiiliig Spread.
