JULY 31, 1910. i mi; i, Hi -i - .KA-tt'A PORTLAND, 20.- Act ECLIPSE AS SEEN IX , I, v MID-SKA DESCRIBED. -'.LONDON' July IS. The Rev. Al gsmon Q. E. Therold, 'of. Hougham Heotoryi Oraotham, 'Bends- to the Dally Mall a vivid description of the recent total eclipse ot the -sun as seen from 'the' R.J M. S) Corinthlc whan at-eea 600 miles north of Hobart, Tasmania. . i ... i"The eclipse began at 1:30 ' and lasted until 4. At 2:45 It was total, ill line, sun went out entirely. A bright- oorona' ehone round its disc. 'Totality lasted several minutes. , .- , , . 'The sight was weird in the extreme.- The' darkness -was ominous,, and the temperature went down sud denly from a mild 65 'to 40. The, clouds on the horizon turned opal, ( ' dove-gray, and black as the last rim. of the '.sun- waB .. covered up, and when the light Anally went out the Sect was like the sudden switching ''Off of an electric laamp: - The sun it-, alt was a black ball with a pale but dlatlnct- crown of brilliance bursting arrowwlse- unevenly on very. side. " Round the corona was a halo like the blurred radiance that- surrounds a 1 mistymoon. -t -, "The sea looked black like ink and' the sky seemed to disappear, beoause it was neither measurable with stars not realizable with clouds. It became,- In fact, negligible, and the only proof that day ' and night had not come to an end was the ex traordinary phenomenon of a black ball fringed with Are a fire that gave little-light to the earth, but seemed sputtering toward-the stars In indignation at an Insult offered by the moon." 1 STARTS FOR SOUTH POLK. Capt Scott Expects to Reach World's , Axis in December, .1911, LONDON, July 19.. Captain Rob rt F. Scott, commander of the British Antarctic expedition, left to day for New Zealand, where he will joiiuthe others of his party on board theexplorlng steamer Terra Nova. Captain Scott plans to arrive at the South Pole in December, 1911. Or., July cording to a. Portland authority who has,. made an extended', irkp 'through the grain growing;-districts ' at- Ore gon, 'Washington nd. Idaho, the 'Pa-i cine Narthweatf will harvest a crop .ofio about v42, OOO.OOO i bushels " of wheat, .as compared with 62;!W)0, 000' bushels i last year. ' Considering the weather conditions the-crop has had to contend with, this showing Is con-( si dared excellent. . The -past whiter was -very severe and did great dam age, particularly in the state - of Washington. " - i ' - - Oregon-is credited with a crop this season of 15,000,000 bushels, or 2, 00,0,000 -bushels, more than last sea son. The gain is due to the Bhowing made by the light lands and the in-jl creased acreages in .Central Oregon,! where railroad --construction lias" stimulated production.- , - . Idaho also shows a cram over last year with an estimated yield this sea-M son of' 9,000,000 bushela as com pared' with 8,343,000 bushels foj The., elements were unkind to Washington. i. . In the Palouse and Big Bend. districtS'the cold , winter inflicted serious .damage to fall wheat -and- greatly .cut,-: down the yield. Washington growers are har- vesting a crop. calculated at 18,000,-, 000 bushels, compared with 30,000,-000-buahels a-year-ago..- ."".'!, Better rainfall .south ot the Snake River is the secret of Oregon's good showing. A peculiarity of the present season is that the - lands usually; classed as the best producers are making the poorest showing, ! while the light lands, due to a good rain fall, are coming i along with 15 bushels an acre. Because of heavy rains the heavy lands formed a crust on top- that -was hard to break through, and the fall sown grain did not make Its usual showing. . Central Oregon, the new district now- being opened by-railroads, will have 1,000,000 bushels more at har vest than last year. This is chiefly because of raw land being broken up during the past year, as well as the good showing of the light lands.
