July 20,-Palents I were Issued yesterday to Crawford ' Elliott, the Inventor of the book ' typewriter, on a cotton picker harvester which he has perfected as I the result of nearly seven years con stant effort. The basic patent grant ed coverB forty claims. The ma chine has been tested for two yean in the cotton fields, and with it on man and a team of mules will do the work of forty hnnd pickers. On ly the ripe cotton Is picked, and this is done without injury to the green cotton or the flowers. The success ful cotton picker has nt last arrived and will enable the planters to great ly Increase the present ncreage un der cultivation. The principle of the machine is n double row of bristle brushes about one and a half Inches In diameter and fourteen inches long, spinning rapidly in such a manner that the revolving brushes are introduced in to the plants close to the ground and drawn up In a vertical line through the plants, the brushes penetrating the bushes from both sides of the row. The ripe cotton adheres to the brushes while the rest of the plant Is not In any way enectea, me brushes traveling to a receptacle where they are stripped of the cot ton and the operation repeated. It has been tested and demon strated that it will do the work at a quarter of the cost of hand labor, which means a saving of $150,000. 000 a vear to the cotton growers.
