Iteid has received the sad news of the death of her brother, Chester V. Rogers, who was killed beneath the overturning engine of a threshing outfit near Caldwell, Idaho, on the irth of 'this month. Mr. Rogers was 24 years of age. He hnd lived with Mr. and Mrs. Reid a great part of his life and was with thorn for a time In Roseburg in 1900. Mr. Rogers was also a brother of Joseph Painter, of Eugene, known to manv Roseburg people and connected with the Vulcan Mining Company, of Duns muir, Calif. The street was not sprinkled before hand and the result was a huge cloud of dust in the wake of the sweeper. Whether It is advisable for the city to wait until after tho close of the forthcoming rainy season before buy ing a sprinkler is a question that! a great many citizens are answering in the .negative. Councilman Mullen has maintained that even during the win ter months a sloping pavement that dries quickly must bo oprlnkled be fore it. Is swept and time may prove that he is correct Sixty Iron posts for Roseburg's new street lighting system In the paved district will arrive here the latter part or this week, according to the an nouncement of "Booster" Colt, who says that he has received word that they will be shipped from Portland next Thursday. All but five of these posts have been signed for by local citizens, but Mr. Colt says he will have little trouble finding locations for them. Most of the opalescent Bpherlcal-shaped globes are already on hand, and the remainder will he here whon the posts are ready for emplacement. Ttie past week has beeu a lively one in the Jackson county circuit court, and Judge Hanna, District Attorney Mul key and the grand Jury have been doiug a land office business; The grand jury discharged Saturday. brought In 30 indictments, moat of them being for violation of the liquor laws.. District Attorney Mulkey has been for some time gathering evi dence against saloonmen and others for selling liquor to minora, keeping open on Sunday and other violations of the law. The gallon-house in Ap plegate Valley and tho one on Rogue river, near Grants Pass, each got a reminder that they must keep closed on Sunday and not sell liquor In, quantities loss than one gallon, as their United States license permits. Among-those indicted were a Medford J a pa nese and a white ma n . each charged with running a blind pig and supplying boys with liquor. A Gold Hill barber, who had a loafing place in the rear of his barber shop for boys, got a fine of $75 and costs for dealing out liquor to them.
