Supplement to - - EVPING ROSEBURC REVIEW HKITEMBKH 13, 1901.' y IXMESTO.VE DEPOSITS ' ' , , X lOUULAS COUNTY. MATKHlALij IN ME I) FORD A bulletin Issued by the United States Geological Survey says: la. the saudstonea aud shales of the Shasta series ("Myrtle forma tion") south aud southeast of Roee burg are a number of lens-shaped masses of limestone, which J. S. Dtller has designated the Whltsett limestone lentils. They occur at in tervals along the ridge and slopes ex tending northeast from I'mpqua river nearly to the bead of the north fork of Deer Creek. The limestone Is a massive gray rock, and as It has yiolded satisfactory Mine at several localities it is probably of good qual ity. The southernmost occurrence Is in sec. 30, T. 28 N., R 5 V.. near the top of a promiuent ridge; the rock is traceable for only about 100 yards, with a width of 30 to 4 0 feet, bo the supply is not great. The next exposure, a mile northeast. In sees. 20 and 29. shows d much larger body of the limestone rising In prominent ledges with the beds dipping north west at an angle of 7 0 degrees. The next body, which is mostly In sec. 14, of the same township, is somewhat Bmaljer, but shows a thickness of CO feet. Two small bod es occur on the south and noith forks of Deer Creek in the next township northeast (T. 29 N., R. 4 W.); they are so compact hat tbry are regarded as marble and have been quarried to some ext nt for that mateiial. The last mass to the northeast is only 15 feet thick. Near Oakland there are 4hree small' masses of impure limestone which have been regarded as cement rock. One is by the road nearly a mile northeast of Oakland, another at the head of Green Valley, 6 miles north west of Oakland,' and the third on Starr's ranch about 4 miles northeast of Umpqna Perry. The areas are less than an acre In! extent. Near Oak land the rock is a bluish shaly lime stone that falls to pieces rather read ily on exposure. It contains, besides a few fossils, -brownish veins and nod ules of various sizes up to 4 feet 1n diameter. -At Starr's ranch the limestone is furl, of broken shells and the beds dip gently to the north west.1 Some of 'the limestone from this region was quarried several years ago and taken to Oregon City to be tested as a cement material, but the results were not reported. Some deposits of tuff a few miles northeast of WUbur have been claim ed to be a natural cement rock, but no authentic tests are known. The material occurs In bodies of consid erable size, but not well exposed. ' MEDrORD, Or., Sept. 19. Esti mates made by leading dealers In building materials in Medford indi cate vhat nearly $2,250,000 has been expended in building operation in his city and vicinity during the past. year. The expenditure is three times or more greater than it, was in the pre vious year, and it is still increasing every mouth. This Is not inclusive of the miles of cement sidewalks which have been constructed nor the paving of the streets. Thirty years ago Medford was a chaparal patch, aud Its first post office was kept In a soapbox, and even 10 years ago it was a country town with two blocks of brick buildings. The Electrical Review suggests that "trackless trolleys," such as are successfully used In Austria and else where in Europe, that is to say. electric vehicles running on ordinary roads, but taking power from over head wires, might be advantageously used to take the place of horse drawn stage coaches, which still con nect with the railroads numerous vil lages having no other means of trans portation, even in the most populous parts of the country. It is pointed out that such stage lines rarely have a traffic which would encourage the projection of electric rallrond3 to take their place as a profitable ven ture; but figures are quoted to show that of the cost of roadbed, track, and electric-line construction In elec tric railroads, only 15 per cent or less Is for overhead conductors and poles; considering therefore that electric road vehicles are obtainable for a much lower cost than railway cars, and that the power-generating 1 plant would bo so much less for a little line operating only three or four stages back and forth per day, it is obvious that such a trackless trollev system could be undertaken for a "tenth of the cost of an electric railway, and with a much bene , chance of profitable operation. A pecmUrity of the Ben Davis m ytotvu Ip the mountain states of the west seems to be a susceptibility to collar rot, a fungous disease which Li killing out a great majority of the trees In many orchards. A shallow cultivation of the field of corn during a dry spell with single horse and live shovel plow after It is head high has often resulted in an in creased yield of from six to ten bush els per acre. With corn at from 00 to 70 cents per bushel It Is an easy mat ter to figure out whether this extra tilling pays. An instance has lately been cited in which an Insnue patient in a western hospital was cured by caring for the hospital poultry flock. lie was not so deranged but that be was able to look j after them, and In some way the Inter est he tool; In his charges and the diverting of his attention from his own condition had the desired curative effect. In fighting pocket gophers, as in cop ing with many another ndunt, Insect or weed, pest, the best results can only be obtained wheu there Is co-operative-effort among the neighbors of the in-' tested locality. It Is a discouraging proposition, this trying to clean up a fellow's place of gophers or .other nox ious things,, when the man across the fence doesn't manifest a like interest In doing the same good work on bis own place. , v I ' Along with the preaching of a gospel for better seed should go an even more emphatic teaching of the necessity of so rotating crops and handling the land that the use of better seed will not ultimately mean a more complete exhaustion of the soil, as a bumper crop takes just so much more fertility from the soil than n poor one. Scrub seed is plenty good enough for the chap who would only provide scrub soil conditions for that which wan thoroughbred. It Is during the dry spell of the lat ter part of the summer, when the blue or lawn grass Is nt low ebb, that other grasses, chieily emb grass, are likely to come In. The matter of eradicat ing this pest Is not simple, but much can be done by adoptlng'n course with the lawn which will keep the blue grass growing at full vigor. This will Include frequent waterings nnd, if the Soli is poor, the scattering of a light top dressing of fertilizer. This, to gether with frequent clipping, will keep the lawn thrifty and will do much -toward smothering the crab grass out. . We always have plenty of fresh vegetables, oranges, lemons and ba nanas.
