Oregon Is gaining a great reputa tion for united boosting. Further more "we have tho goods" to back up that boosting, and eastern people are finding that out also. Throw a few crumbs to the birds. They are doubtless more surprised at this weather than the people are; i and their accustomed food Bupply is entirely cut off. They will many times repay this trouble by picking up obnoxious bugs and worms. The talk that advertising does not pay is almost puerile. Ropre sentatlves from the Cottage Grove Commercial Club met with the local club last night to discuss the ques tion of the formation of a new coun ty. Their principal argument was that ft would be easier and more economical to administer the affairs of the proposed county from Cottage Grove than It is now from either Eu gene or Rosuburg. In this connec lion they say that In the last elec tion it cost Douglas $18 per vote in the Bohemia district. The area of the proposed county Is estimated ut 1950 square miles, and contains a population 8000, 11500 he Ing In Lane and 1500 in Douglas. The Cottuge Grove delegation asked to have the Lane county legislators In structed to sanction tho formation of the new county; but the Eugene club went on record as opposed to the division. Coos Bay & Eastern is Again In the Court Other Mutters. Marshfield Times: The owner ship of the Coos Bay. Rosebura ft Eastern railway and its extensive holdings In Coos county Is attacked In a suit which was recently filed in the United 8tates court by R. A. Gra ham, the builder of the road, against John D. Spreckels and Brothers Company and the Southern Pacific company. Mr. Graham alleges th.it In 1906, the Spreckels wrongfullv converted the stock and bonds of the company to their own use and dls KBed of the property to the Southern Pacific. The case will cfame up for hear ing soon. It Is expected. John S. Coke left for Portland today to parti cipate in the suit. It Is expected that the entire hlBtory of the road and some of the frenzied financiering in Its construction will be rehashed In detail when the case comes to trial. Graham says that he waB the sole owner of the $600,000 stock of the company and Its $620,000 bonds. These were placed with the Spreckels as security for money loaned by them for the construction of the line. Tom Sheridan, of Roseburg, .who was interested with Graham In the construction of the line, has also be gun suit against the Spreckels and the Southern Pacific for damages on the same grounds. His case has not been set for trial yet. Casting Slurs at Kidder. Mr. Kidder, of Roseburg, the man who some months ago filed on the property on Isthmus inlet, across from the C. A. Smith mill, as a home stead, has arrived on Coos Bay. and has erected a small nouse on the land and declares that he Is determined to retain the property. It will be rera eunbered that the property was under stood by everyone around here to be long to Henry 8ongErtackon. Kidder. claimed that it had never been enter ed on, wns still a government hold ing and could be secured by his as a homestead. Mr. Sengstacken de clared that Kidder's claim was with out foundation. "I am sorry that Kidder didn't erect a better house on the land," said Mr. Sengstacken today. "I no ticed the other day that he was build ing on my property and I told him so, but he appears to be trying to run his blulT as rnr as he can. He will receive notice from the United States Land department shortly that he has absolutely no claim to It. I thought to oust him for trespassing but as long as he Isn't doing any harm I de cided not to." Storm Puts VICB Down. Coos Bay Is still isolated from the remainder of the country, at least so far as telegraphic or telephone communication Is concerned. The Western Union wires have been down ror throe days and the long distance phone line between Myrtle Point and No remedy that does not entirely remove the cause of Catarrh from the blood will ever make a permanent cure of the trouble. Statistical data for the placer mines are as yet incomplete, but It Is certain that there were not so many In operation as In 1907, and It appears probable that tha output has a total value of somewhat over $15, 000,000, as compared with $16, 491,000 in 1907. H00 as his share of the messenger's 25 cents a mile for the trip to Wash-' ington. Elector R. R. Butler, of Gilliam county, wus chosen to carry the vote. His mileage will amount to nearly $900. If he shall be economical there will be a residue for him, over expenses, of $500 or $600. This sum Mr. Lee wanted divided between the four electors, share and share alike. He was supported by Elector A. C. Marsters, of Douglas, but Elector F. J. Miller, of Linn, and Butler oppos ed, and finally Lee's plan was aban doned. When the electors met It was the opinion of Mnrsters that the session should be private. The reason for secrecy was a mystery to the news paper men, but they marched in and MarBtors neglected to Insist that they be ejected. Tho subject then broach ed by Lee showed the reason for the desire of "executive session." Lee and Butler were candidates for messenger. Lee stated that it had been customary for the foue electors to share the perquisites with each other, and If he were the mes senger he would glady continue the custom. Miller stood against the scheme, however, and It fell through. For many ballots the vote fjr Lee and Butler was a tie, and finally Marsters went over to Butler, and perquisites became a closed incident. Don't Get a Divorce.
