Ashland TldingB: Taylor Murphy,
the Southern Pacific brakeman, who
fell off the caboose of a moving train
while changing flags near Sims, Cul.,
last Monday morning, and received
most serious injuries, died at the hos
pital at Sacramento, Dec. 22.
Fred Dodge, the S. P. brakeman, who
was struck several weeks ago by the
covered S. P. railroad bridge south
of Ashland, which a few days before
cost Brakeman Carl Will hiB life,
was taken to the railroad hospital at
Sacramento today, his condition
growing out of the Injuries to his
spine which he received In the acci
dent, having become quite serious
within the past week.

Salem Statesman: A representative
of the Hassan. Paving Company, of
Portland, appeared before the coun
cil last night and spoke at length re
garding the Hasan m pavement, which
is a combination of stone and cement
and forms of sort of concrete. He
states the pavement Is placed In Port
land for 11.65 a square yard for a
four-Inch pavement and for (2
sauare yard for six-Inch pavement.
The councllmen seemed to be quite
Impressed by his talk. The pave
ment Is now used largely in Portland
and nine miles more of It will be
put in in that city next year.

quite as heavy as In previous years,

Albany Democrat: William Grant

after by the Masonic lodge. He is
penniless and destitute. Grant was
formerly of Corvallls, an Oregon pio
neer, and took an active part In the
building of the Corvallis & Eastern,
then the Oregon Pacific. It was
Grant who saved Mr. Avrcnn from
the burning Wells warehouse. How
soon a man is forgotten, no matter
how many his good deeds. (Grant
was brought to Roseburg from his
homestead near West Fork several
weeks ago.)
