Merry Christmas to all next Fri

And still the transgressor fulls to
find hiB pathway strewn with roses.
Oregon people call this wintor, yet
flowers are blooming in the open air
In this city, as well as numerous oth
er places In Douglas county.
Eugene Guard: Before the Way
and Means Committee of congress
recently the Uooth-Kelly Lumber
Company, of this city, made an argu
ment against the entrance Into thlK
country, duty free, of Canadian lum
ber. They contended that such for
eign competition would tend to re
duce prices and the result would be o
great waste of our rorest reeources.
The'comuany contends that at the
presont time over 40 per cent of the
forests of Oregon and Washington
are wasted, owing to tho Inability to
find a profitable market for the com
mon grades. Additional competition
they argue, would not tend to a re
duction In the already enormous
waste. They exhibited photographs
of lands logged off while the lumber
was at a fair price, and also those
worked over when the market was al
a lower level, In order to Illustrate
their contention.
The recent death by suffocation of
two young sistors in a poor lodging
house of the Enst Side, Now York,
was surroundod by unusually puth
etle features, according to the paiierr
of that city. The young girls, one
seventeen, the other nlnoteen yonrt
of age, came to the United Stater
from Russia to make a living foi
themselves, and eventually to prepare
tho way for the emigration of th
other mombers of their family from
Russia. All day they worked In p
sweatshop and at night they utu.lk-f
English and other things. For them
selves they spent only enough ol
their meagre earnings to keep then
alive, the rest they placed in a sav
ings bank, with a view of sending foi
their folks when the hoard had
grown to adequate proportions.
Eagerly they awulted the time when
they could bring nbout the reunion
of the family and at last they bar
saved enough for that purpose. The;

According to the report of the de
tectives the small group of which the
Ftltzvllle operator was a member was
but a link in the chain of the con
spiracy, which extended from Helena
to San' Francisco.
The mode of operation of the al
leged conspirators was simple. An
operator at a small station where
there was no checking system would
receive a mesBnge for another similar
point, take payment for the com
pany, transmit the message and pock
et the money, which was subsequent
ly divided with the operator at the
receiving end.
It Is alleged tho discovery of the
conspiracy came about through the
greediness of certain of tho operat
ors, who finally became so bold that
they would receive n message, take
payment aud then destroy the copy,
without transmitting It, In order to
avoid dividing the spoil with receiv
ing operators. This course led to
so many complaints that suspicion
heenme aroused aud an Investigation
was started.

A Woman Finds AH Her Energx and
Ambition Slipping Away.
Roseburg women know bow the
aches and painB that come when the
kidneys fail make life a burden.
Backache, hip pains, headaches, dizzy
spells, distressing urinary troubles,
all tell of sick kidneys and warn you
of the stealthy approach of diabetes,
dropsy and Urlght's disease. Doan's
Kidney Pills permanently cure all
these disorders. Here's proof of It
in a Roseburg woman's words:
Mrs. James Arrance, Pitzer St.,
Roseburg, Or., says: "Doan's Kidney
Pills proved ofsuch great benefit to
me that I do not have any hesitancy
in recommending tbem to anyone In
need of such a remedy. Kidney com
plaint clung to me for a long time
and on some occasions I was given
such misery from pains In the small
of my back that it was utterly Im
possible for me to perform my house
hold duties. There was also a con
stant soreness through the region of
my kidneys and at times considerable
swelling In those parts. No remedy
I tried benfltted me and when a
friend Insisted on my trying Doan's
Kidney Pills I procured a box at A.
C. Marsters & Co's drug store and
commenced their use. The good ef
fects were noticeable from the first
and as I continued taking them, the
Inmeness in my loins disappeared, as
also did the pains In my back."
