Here ln the city the day was gen
erally observed as a holiday, the
business streets being deserted save
for the people leaving for the celebra
tion at Guadalupe.

dates back to 1631, ten years after
the conquest of Mexico by the Span
iards, when, according to tradition,
the Virgin Mary appeared to an In
dian on the spot where the church
now stands and made known to him
that she wanted an edifice erected to
