arraigned on November 2f and en

Attorneys for the defense will prob
ably attempt to secure a postpone
ment of the trial until the January
term of court, and it is thought they
will he successful.
Owing to the prominence of the
parties involved, the slaying of ear
mark and the subsequent arrest of
the Coulters and Sharp created a sen
sation such as Tennessee had never
before known. Carmack was the edi
tor of a local newspaper, and his
editorial criticisms of Colonel Cooper
are alleged to have led to the tragedv,
which resulted In his death. M'-sides
serving his state In the I'nfted States
seriate. Carmack was this year a can
didate for governor, and was defeated
in the primaries by Governor Patter
son after the hottest campaign Ten
liens'! has ever known. He repre
ijenied the radical wtng of the Demo
cratic party, which is seeking to bring
about state-wide prohibition.
