Good Cough Medicine for Children.
The season for coughs and coldB is
now at hand and too much care can
not be used to protect the children.
A child Is much more likely to con
tract diphtheria or scarlet fever when
he has a cold. The quicker you cure
his cold the less the risk. Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy Is the sole re
liance of many motners, ana rew oi
those who have tried It are willing
to use any other. Mrs. F. F. Starcher
of Ripley, W. Va., says: "I have
never used anything other than
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for my
children and It has always given good
satisfaction." This remedy contains
no opium or other narcotic and may
be given as confidently to a child as
to an adult. For asle by Hamilton

Good Women Who
Have No Tact.
Why theHoy Brought
Up by His Mother
Is So Ottn a Mis
erable Failure.
Mlf you ask me my opinion," re
marked Mrs. Worldly Wise, "I tell you
plainly I would Infinitely rather huvo
on my visiting list a polished villain
than a tactless good person."
Her audience looked a trifle shocked.
"Possibly you did not see Miss Smith
leave here a few minutes ago," Mrs.
Worldly Wise went on, showing traces
of irritation. "Well, she has m all
wrought up. I'm sure I could have
carried on a half hour's conversation
with his Satanic majesty himself and
been less uncomfortable tban I was
during my estimable friend's vlBlt
"Mary Ann Smith is the best woman
on earth, but she Is as devoid of tact
as a baldheaded man is of balr. She
always was that way. As a child If
she came near you she would poke her
linger into your eye with the best of
intentions in the world and step on
your foot while she was picking up
your handkerchief for you. She has
grown less awkward physically, but
mentally she Is the same. Mary Ann
Smith Is one of the misguided sister
hood that believes In telling you the
truth .for your own good. Women of
that kind should be sent as mission
aries 'to the cannibals, but I'd actually
feel sorry for tbe cannibals. I'm afraid
tbey couldn't digest them."
"She must have ruffled you up con'
Biderably," the bachelor observed.
"From start to finish she beautifully
and unconsciously placed the tip of her
finger on all my mental sore spots.
She Irritated me from the moment
she climbed Into my drawing room
with boots better fitted for mountain
climbing. She drove me mad the way
she fidgeted In ber chair. Her glassy
way of staring at you and her mucous
voice always give me tbe solvere, and
so does tbe aimless way In which she
walks, threatening every vase and bit
of bric-a-brac In the room. True, she
never docs Bmasli anything, but you
always feel that she Is going to. It's
the same way with her conversation.
Dissimulation is scorned by her. She
prides herself on her bluntness and
ONH OF TUB MIflODIDED 8ISTBBIIOOD.
her lack of hypocrisy, and, there's no
doubt of It, she Is a thoroughly good
woman and all that sort of thing. But,
oh, how I wish she !ad fewer virtue
and mora tact!
"Lots of good women need It," the
bachelor observed cynically.
Where Mothers Ara at Fault.
"It's a terrible Injustice to a boy to
have til in brought up entirely by wo
men." I heard s Judge In the chll
dren's court say this recently, and
surely he must know. And why Is It
so? Because a woman's view of life la
so narrow. There are women who
bring up their sons like Spartan youths,
women who are both strong, liberal
and wise, but tbey are the exceptions,
ns a rule.
The average mother wants her son
to be a god boy to the point of weak
ness. She doesn't want hlui to fight;
she doesn't want him out of ber sight;
she keeps nagging at him, like a ben
over a duckling that will go Into tbe
water, nntll the lad reaches tha sge
when nagging won't bold him any
longer, when he goes his own gait re
gardless of authority.
The goody good sort of education
which most women Inlllct on s boy ei
ther makes a sissy of him If he Is gen
tle In disposition or drives him to tbe
other extreme If be Is naturally strong
and active.
What women need more than tbe
ballot Is all the Influence that can
broaden and strengthen tbelr charac
ters. I say they should come under these
Influences before tbey experiment with
tbe ballot. We have enough weak, fool
ish and Ineffectual legislation as It Is
now. snd this Is due to wask. Ineffi
cient men not brooght up to set sharp
ly and think strongly when they wers
lads at home. MA CD ROUl.NSON.
