Lewis, which Is about to be made public, the total amount of arid lands under contract and seggregated by tho state for reclamation under the provisions of Carey Act Is 3!7, 908 acres. The Secretary of the In terior has executed contracts with the state Tor the reclamation of 12, 277.64 acres during the punt two yearn, which brings the total under contract between the state and the United Slutes to 29&,3r0 acres. Twenty lists of laud have been seg gregated. Nine of these are In the Deschutes Valley, aggregating 307, 038 acres, and eight, amounting to 76,832 acres, are in the Harney Val ley. The remaining three segregations amounting to 13.037 acres, are scat tered. The largest of these Is In Iake County, and the other two are lu Haker and Umatilla counties. The state has entered Into con tracts with' construction companies for the reclamation of 99,300 acres. This, including the acreage under contracts previously executed, makes a total of 280,257. These contracts involve the payment to these com panies by future settlers of over $!, 000,000, besides an annual inn In ten anco charge of about (170,000. Work was begun this afternoon on the foundation for the new machine shop Lu this city uelng erected by Measrs. Pilklngton and Daly, an nouncement of this enterprise having been made in these columns Bonie time ago. Their location is on the old Masonic Hall corner opposite the court house on Douglas street and back of the Van Houten hotel prop erty. This structure is to be 40x120 feet In size and is to Include their blacksmith and machine shops with an automobile garage In the rear. The new establishment is to be mod ernly arranged and equipped with up-to-date machinery and appliances. A little later they expect to erect an other building for carriage and wa gon work and general foundry pur poses. A foundry has long been needed here and will doubtless do a good business, as well as the ma chine shop. Taken altogether this Is an industrial Institution that will be of much benefit to the town and sur rounding country, as well as a profit able venture for the owners. Out side parties have from time to time been figuring on the establishment of auch an Institution here, but it has remained for home people to take up the actual work. The deceased was a well-known pioneer of this county, having set tled hero In the fall of 1853. He suffered a stroke of paralysis over a year ago and was again stricken about six weeks ago, since which time he had been entirely helpless. The funeral will be held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon from the family home and interment will fol low in the family cemetery. Hev. V. A. Smlck will conduct the ser vices.
